Mike Walsh's WSS and more - Wednesday, October 15, 2008

 Wednesday, October 15, 2008

My new TV has an input for USB drives that you can use to play MP3 files and see JPG images via/on the TV. [But not .mp4 or divx files which would surely be more sensible for a TV set.]

Naturally I tried this out with all my USB sticks only to find that there were very few .mp3 files on them. But I have a mass of external, (some of which are powered), disks that contain backups of my CDs - typically in .wmv format (which it doesn't play either I suspect) or done for the Ipod, but surely I thought there are some .mp3 files there somewhere.

So I connected them one-by-one and found that  although in each case the drive was recognized as being connected the TV wouldn't open it. Obviously a disk format problem I thought but it took some scouring of the TV manual to find the place where it said FAT16 or FAT32 only.

Well naturally I'd formatted all my hard disks (except those USB sticks) as NTFS (or for the Mac in a couple of cases, I discovered) so as I still wanted to see if a large powered drive could be connected to the TV and work, I set about moving everything off a 340 GB drive to the desktop and then planned to re-format that drive as FAT32 and move the stuff back.

Moving the stuff took quite a while of course and then I was ready to format the empty disk. The system (XPPro) gave me the opportunity of formatting it as NTFS. Nothing else.

So much for that idea.

(The next non-FAQ post here will be about dragging in a portable and a new keyboard in order to play music files from the same NTFS formatted via the TV. Completely pointless really but still.)

NOTE: Amendment to KB articles: Microsoft are now not amending the date of a KB article if the change made is marked as a version point change (so from 2.2 to 2.3 for instance).
This ought to mean that the amendment made is cosmetic rather than important as important text changes ought to result in a major version change (such as from 2.2 to 3.0).
Because of this change and to avoid unnecessary effort I will in future not amend the listings in the WSS FAQ sites if only a minor version change has taken place.
I will continue to amend both the date and version numbers of major version changes and of course will continue to add all relevant new KB articles that my RSS feeds and other sources give me.

I've had a copy of my "Sams Teach Yourself SharePoint 2007: Windows SharePoint Services 3.0" book in my hands for about five days now (thanks to over 24 hours delivery time for the last 15 miles of the journey from the US) and in that time Amazon US have still been showing it as being at Pre-Order status.

Today, finally, the Amazon US site is showing it as being in Stock

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0672330008/heme0f

Now all it needs is someone to buy it.

(Somehow the fact that that same Amazon site is showing it as the 550,732 "best-selling" book doesn't in my book indicate massive sales. Here's hoping that's a pre- "In Stock" figure).

It's very very rarely that I post anything in this blog that doesn't have anything to do with SharePoint. Typically they are then computer (and/or Zune/IPod) questions.

This one can just about be described as a computer issue ...

The British football club Newcastle United is up for sale.

These days that means a foreign bidder. Manchester City has just gone to a Middle Eastern Sheikh so it was interesting to see a report of a Nigerian bidder for Newcastle United.

I understand that they were offering $ 400 million and - rumour has it - requesting the Newcastle owner to send them $ 10,000 as an indication of his good faith.

People writing to forums are sometimes very odd.

I came today across a post where the poster felt compelled to tell us that it was his second post to that forum. How that is relevant to any question is beyond me.

That on the other hand is fairly rare.

What is more common are the people who write at the bottom of their posts "please help me!" or even the more strident "PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!". Do they really think that this line makes the people who spend some of their free time answering other peoples questions more likely to answer just this one? If so, they are wrong.

Finally there are the relatively few people who write that their own question is "Urgent!" - usually in the subject and often also in the text. Well that is a real turn-off as when you look at the questions there is NEVER anything there that is any more urgent than any other forum question. (Even if there is, the forums are not the place to post urgent questions - instead they should take the risk of being forced to pay and call Microsoft Customer Support Services [if that's this week's name]) with their problem).

Luckily in the forums I can do something I can't do in the equivalent newsgroups and edit the subject lines. Usually I do this when someone posts a question in say the Workflow forum that has a Subject of "Workflow" which doesn't help people scanning that forum to see if there is something they can answer, so I change the subject to better reflect the question put, but I can also use that possibility to get rid of all "Urgent"s from the Subject.

The books page containing information about SharePoint 2007 books

http://wss.asaris.de/sites/walsh/Lists/WSSv3%20FAQ/V%20Books.aspx

has for the next month (and however long it is after that before I realise I need to remove it) an Amazon banner ad offering 2-day free delivery on orders placed as part of a 30-day "Amazon Premium" trial.

The interesting thing in connection with this banner ad is that while it says you can sign up for a free 30 day trial period, when you click on it the offer is actually for a 3 month trial period.

Now I don't know about you but I'm not likely to go through the hassle of signing up for something in order to save on postage for such a short period as 30 days, but three months is quite a different thing. If I was in the US, I'd have clicked that ad and signed up long ago. I buy enough books and DVDs from them to justify the effort. [Note carefully: "the effort" - I'm talking about the free trial here. I doubt if the Premium program would make any sense for me even if I did live in the US.]

I'm assuming that the Amazon Premium system (free 2nd day delivery on all orders for $79 a year - "free" 1st day delivery for an extra $3.95 per shipment [on top of the $79 of course] ) is only for the US because shipment costs abroad are so much higher that they would need to charge much more even for free SLOW delivery. But of course as usual there's no mention of that in any clearly visible location.

Some things never change. Let's hope that non-US visitors to my Books page are as clear on that as I am and don't waste their time clicking on the ad.

It's not everyday that someone says "I remember when you bought software, you got a manual" but it sometimes seems like that.

I was going though my e-mail for the past couple of weeks and there in one newsletter it was again.

So I thought I'd defy the fact that I have contributed to a book from a label (Wrox) of the Wiley group and have written a book for a label (SAMS) of Pearson Education and tell you what I use.

You might have guessed from the above paragraph that - at least for the moment - the books I use for reference use don't come from either Wiley or Pearson.

In fact for the client stuff, I use the Missing Manual series (of which there are two sub-series and I *don't* use the "for Starters" sub-series and nor should you). Only last weekend I needed to find out where they had hidden the Conditional logic function in Excel 2007 (having tried to find it via the UI in **extremely logical** places for about 30 minutes) and so I grabbed the Excel 2007 Missing Manual and had it in no time. (It's under the Home menu item - now how logical is that?)

For the server and Operating Stuff I use the Technical Reference series.

Both of these are from O'Reilly by the way.

But note that these are reference manuals and I don't use them for anything else. O'Reilly have always been good at them starting with the In a Nutshell range.

I probably wouldn't pick an O'Reilly book as a learning tool though. Then I WOULD go to a Wiley or a Pearson imprint.

(and why not Microsoft Press ? Well their really technical books are fine but a bit too technical for me and their other books are just a bit too happy with the Microsoft products they are talking about and far too often make assumptions that all users have the latest Microsoft product versions on the client side).

I'm quite proud of my SharePoint 2007 Books page here

http://wss.asaris.de/sites/walsh/Lists/WSSv3%20FAQ/V%20Books.aspx

and I spend quite a lot of time trying to keep it up-to-date both with new books and marking books released as soon as they are.

Naturally even the best of Searches doesn't find everything if you use the wrong text for your search and so it was here.

I've been using mostly "SharePoint" (but also "Workflow"; "Excel Services"; "InfoPath") in the various Amazon sites to find what's out there and it's worked pretty well especially when coupled with various RSS feeds and of course information direct from MVPs who are writing or who have written books.

But, as i discovered today, there are SharePoint books out there (perhaps only one) that don't have "SharePoint" (or any other of those search criteria) in the title of the book.

Here's the one I found. Luckily I found it just before (well probably a month before) it gets published so it's still Pre-Order status at Amazon.

Expert WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007 Programming (Wrox - Shahram Khosravi)

Luckily I already listed Mr Khosravi's other book

(Professional SharePoint Workflow Programming - http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0470402512/heme0f)

so he can't be too mad at me.

That other book, by the way IS out.

9/23/2008 10:59:32 AM (FLE Standard Time, UTC+02:00)  #    Comments [0]   Other Computer | SharePoint  |
It's been a long wait but yesterday I got an e-mail from the publisher of "Sams Teach Yourself SharePoint 2007: Using Windows SharePoint Services 3.0" which contained a tracking number.

In other words the copies of the book that I get myself are on their way!

Amazon US (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0672330008/heme0f) is still listing the book as Pre-Order though so I guess *their* copies are also only on the way.

Anyway I thought I'd take this chance to say something about what I hoped to achieve with the book.

In hindsight, I had three main aims.

1. The book should be complete in itself

This meant that I needed to persuade my Publishers that one of the 24 "Hours" (chapters) should be how to install WSS 3.0.

I then had the problem of deciding whether to have this chapter based on Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008. Windows Server 2003 was more commonly available to people but a Windows Server 2008 installation chapter would be a selling point as most books so far haven't been able to include Windows Server 2008 installation details (mostly of course because it wasn't out when those books were written).

In the end I decided that I should go for the greater good rather than for sales figures and Chapter Two is installing WSS 3.0 on top of Windows Server 2003 R2.

However I was loath to miss out completely on Windows Server 2008 installation so I wrote an Appendix on how to install WSS 3.0 on Windows Server 2008. While I was at it I also wrote Appendices for installing a Virtual Machine system and one with full details of a Windows 2003 installation (Chapter Two installs a default Windows Server 2003 installation and concentrates mainly on installing the requirements for WSS 3.0 and WSS 3.0 itself).

The problem was that when the whole book had been written and reviewed it was far too long and something had to give, so those three appendices were moved to the web site for the book where they hopefully will be available when the book itself is available.

Note: "complete" also means that all the major areas of WSS 3.0 are covered in the book, but not that every single option in every single menu is listed and described. There's already a book that does that and I found it boring. I certainly didn't want to write a boring book!

2. The book should offer additional information to the existing books.

I didn't want to write a book that only covered the same ground as existing books but wanted something that better reflected the possibilities available at the time as was writing it (which was Post SP1).

This will mean that even people who have already bought (say) the WSS 3.0 Step-by-step book or the "SharePoint 2007 For Dummies" book (and even people who have bought the 1000+ page Mastering WSS 3.0 book) will find things covered in my book which aren't in those earlier books.

So there is content on Search Server 2008; on the Extended Blog Edition; on installing the Fantasic 40 templates; on third-party web parts etc. etc.

There's also a whole chapter on creating reports on SharePoint lists by using Access 2007 which I haven't seen in any other books.

There's more but that should give you the general idea.

3. The book should clearly show that WSS 3.0 plus additions can truely be an alternative to MOSS 2007.

This, I'll admit, is a hobby horse of mine. I always squirm when I'm at a presentation and someone (typically from Microsoft) says that WSS 3.0 is for the use of a department.

My conviction is not only that WSS 3.0 is easier to learn that MOSS 2007 but that people should if possible always do a trial installation of WSS 3.0 to see if they really need MOSS 2007.

For instance, the "Office with WSS 3.0" chapters show that when working with Office 2003 and 2007, WSS 3.0 is just as good a storage location as MOSS 2007.

The two workflow (WSS 3.0 workflow and SPD workflow) chapters show that you don't need to just look at the list of features and see that MOSS "must" be better because it has more built-in workflows than WSS 3.0.

The chapter on the Data View function shows how you can - even in WSS 3.0 - have data from another list in a different site; from a database etc. visible in your SharePoint page.

The part chapter on installing language packs shows how you can have sites in two or more languages on the same SharePoint installation even with WSS 3.0 (although admittedly without the more advanced options that only MOSS offers).

I think that's enough to cover that idea.

---------------

Of course, when I was asked if I was interested in writing a book, none of these three main ideas were in my head at all. But over the course of sketching out the book and then writing it, they became obvious.

But in the end there's no point in providing new content if writing about it has not been done well. So I'm hoping that the final judgement on the book is that both quantity (areas covered) and quality (of writing) are good.

Fingers Crossed!

P.S. It took (only) 2 days and four hours from the time the parcel was picked up in Indianapolis to it being cleared at Helsinki airport (via Paris and Copenhagen) and placed "On FedEx vehicle for delivery". The airport is about 15 miles from me and the timing of it being placed on the vehicle for delivery was 12.27 so plenty of time to deliver it that day you'd have thought (and someone was in listening for the sound of the door bell all the time).

You'd have thought so, but, no, it's now 20 hours later and there's still been no delivery. Luckily it's now Thursday and not Friday as the Finnish branches of the main international couriers seem to close down for the weekend midday Friday so if it were Friday I probably wouldn't see the book copies until next week. (I've had things arrive on Thursday in Helsinki that weren't delivered until Tuesday).

P.P.S. The parcel finally arrived 26 hours after having been placed in a FedEx vehicle for delivery 15 miles away from my home. It contained a single copy of the book. The contract says more so I'm going to have to go through all this again. Sighs.
