I planned for a long time to install IE8 Beta2 in a VM created specially for it, but of course I never got around to doing that (even though all I would have needed to do was make a copy of my existing VM with IE7).

I could also have taken a Snapshot of my VM before installing IE8 Beta 2 but I was out of my mind and didn't.

Instead I relied on a very careful look at the official MS page including the link to the download to make sure there was no "Warning: this installation will over-write your existing IE installation".

There wasn't such a message on that page so I went ahead and expected after the installation to have both IE7 and IE8 Beta 2.

Now I may be wrong but that doesn't seem to be what I have. All my old links to IE7 now load IE8.

Why do I bother telling you this and especially why today ? Because I've just posted my weekly blog item with the additions/changes to the WSS FAQ site and (using IE8) it was a complete mess with not a single line feed in place.

It seems that, in common with Firefox; etc. you can now no longer copy formatted text (empty lines; line feeds etc.) from NotePad into a multi-line entry box but just as with all those other browsers you need to write in your own HTML statements.

This, guys, was why despite using other browsers for many things, I always used IE 6 or 7 for adding or amending to the multi-line edit boxes in my SharePoint sites. And now you've sc**wed it up completely.

Another thing that's scr**ed up completely is logging in to the *Microsoft*(!) forums. Click login and you don't see the standard Passport login box until you by hand amend the URL so that it goes to (something like) www.login.com - i.e. you get rid of all the following stuff.

I suspect (hope) that I will somewhere find a "IE7 compatibilty" button, but for now I re-posted my blog entry in my wife's non-VM IE7 copy (and was grateful to VMWare for putting the text from a file in my VM into a place where the Ctrl-V in the main system could grab it).

P.S. For anyone facing this problem, use the menu item Tools / Compatibility View Settings to add the site that has multi-line fields. Then you are back to a working (!) system. (You can also decide to specify ALL sites as being in Compatibity View mode. I'm not that far, yet)

I must confess that I haven't heard much about PerformancePoint Server 2007 beyond the fact that it was one of the several "Office 2007 Servers" that were mentioned in one of the books I already had listed on the SP 2007 book page because another of the products IT talked about was MOSS 2007.

But one of my RSS feeds gave me a post from Philo Janus talking about his new PerformancePoint Server 2007 book and I wondered why I had subscribed to blogs from him so I went to look at the book.

Then I found that this product works with MOSS 2007, so I checked out a few more of the PerformancePoint Server 2007 books' descriptions and found that they too mentioned SharePoint.

So I made the conclusion that listing books on PerformancePoint Server 2007 might well be a useful thing to have on my SP 2007 books page

and created a new Group for them, which now has five entries - three are out; one is out but available at the moment only from Amazon UK (which is unusual) and one (in fact, the Philo Janus one that started this whole thing off) is not yet out.

NOTE: Amendment to KB articles: Microsoft are now not amending the date of a KB article if the change made is marked as a version point change (so from 2.2 to 2.3 for instance).
This ought to mean that the amendment made is cosmetic rather than important as important text changes ought to result in a major version change (such as from 2.2 to 3.0).
Because of this change and to avoid unnecessary effort I will in future not amend the listings in the WSS FAQ sites if only a minor version change has taken place.
I will continue to amend both the date and version numbers of major version changes and of course will continue to add all relevant new KB articles that my RSS feeds and other sources give me.

There was recently a forum message giving the address of a Microsoft article on connecting web parts which I checked out before marking that reply as an Answer.

While I was checking it (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepointserver/HA100241051033.aspx) out, I noticed a link to an article on List View web part.

Now I've always assumed that this must be something that comes with MOSS only as I mainly use WSS 3.0 and I've never seen a link there to Create a "List View Web Part".

Because of this, if there's been a message in a newsgroup/forum that mentions List View Web Part, I've always moved quickly on.

So I checked that article (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepointserver/HA100240521033.aspx) and discovered the following starting sentence.

"There is no Web Part called List View."

which of course makes you wonder why they have written a long article on something that doesn't exist (and why people keep saying they have one).

It turns out that this List View web part that doesn't exist is just the official name for what I usually think of as the "web part version of a List".

(Something that often confuses people so that I make sure in my book (by spending a lot of time on it, with examples) that people are aware that this is (unless filtered) the same content as the list itself. So if you create two such web parts on a page from the same list you get the same thing twice (unless the web parts are differently filtered).)

In other words the only problem is that I never knew the official term for this Web Part that doesn't exist (but does).

Now I do know the official term, maybe just maybe I'll start reading those newsgroup/forums postings that include that term.

I have several RSS feeds of new SharePoint/Office MSDN / TechNet documents which I use to keep me informed about new documents that I need to add to the WSS FAQ sites.

This is fine so long as they only give me the latest documents and come at regular intervals.

However sometimes there's suddenly a flurry of "new" RSS feeds some of which go back for several months and I need to check through them all to see if I have the article already (which in the case of the 1 month old (and older) ones I probably do).

Add to that the fact that there are several different feeds some of which overlap (but I need all of them because sometimes only one has a link to an article I need) and I needed a way to print them out.

So there was the usual problem that a feed in my browser had only a few items visible and printing the whole page anyway produced a confusing picture.

In comes SnagIt. It of course creates images from sections of your screen. At first look that wouldn't help either because the section of my screen I can see on screen has only a few of the links.

But then I saw that there's an option in SnagIt that I hadn't seen before - "Scrolling Window (web page)". This is perfect for this. You set it going; click the centre of the window you can see; and it generates an image of just the links and descriptions of all the links on the (full) page.

What's more, you can print that image direct from SnagIt thus saving a couple more clicks.
