 Wednesday, April 09, 2008

I've been writing a book for Sams ("Teach Yourself SharePoint 2007 in 24 Hours") which has an ISBN number (and a listing in my own list of SharePoint 2007 books here

http://wss.asaris.de/sites/walsh/Lists/WSSv3%20FAQ/V%20Books.aspx)

but which is not listed yet (even pre-Order) at Amazon US.

Writing a book and attempting to keep updating the WSS FAQ sites and not being a stranger to the SharePoint newsgroups and forums is taking up most of my time these days which is one good reason for keeping the number of blogs down.

The other reason you may think is not a good reason.

While testing for and writing book sections I often come across things that it would make suitable content for a blog. But at the same time a lot of these things are things which may only be in *my* book and with so many other SharePoint books out there already I need those "only in my book" sections to have any chance of people chosing to buy it.

So sorry, no technical blogs at least until I've finished; handed it over; and the book is on the verge of becoming available to buy.

What I decided, however, that I could do is a quick outline about how this process went and how it's affecting my life.

I was approached to do the book so hadn't done any of the usual things such as preparing an outline of the book and a justification for it which is what you need to do if *you* approach a publisher.

(I've seen that sort of thing several times in the past when I've been asked to comment on them by a publisher)

Not having done that meant I had no outline for the book on hand so the first thing the publisher wanted from me was a proposed list of chapters.

This seemed like putting the cart before the horse as I didn't think I'd be able to write a Table of Contents until I'd written a good bit of the book, but they insisted and so I managed to find 24 chapter titles. (The "24 Hours" series is actually 24 separate chapters with each one containing (theoretically) an Hour of instruction/information).

Well let me tell you that these publishers knew what they were doing because, even though some Hours have become 2 or even 3 Hours and some have vanished or been merged, having that table of contents has become a blessing when actually writing the book.

The other thing to tell you is that all the dedications you read that say something like "thanks to my wife and kids for putting up with me for the six months it took me to write this book" are truly justified.

Maybe it's because it's my first book (the single chapter for the RealWorld SharePoint 2007 book doesn't count) but it's never far from my thoughts and I'm working in my head through what to say in the next chapter almost all the time it would otherwise be empty (bus journeys to work for instance) or what's worse when sitting at the lunch table with my wife.

I'm also completely aware when I am not writing it that I am "taking time off" although the obligatory walk in the woods to get needed exercise between testing/writing sessions doesn't qualify for that quite as much as sitting down and reading a (non-Computer) book does.

So the book is progressing well even though I always thinking that the next but one chapter (the one that hasn't been processed by my bus-travelling brain yet) will be a struggle and will be impossible to fill 20 pages with. So far, in fact, the problem has been more that of keeping the chapters/hours down to 20 pages.

(Luckily I don't have the kids problem - he's 34 and naturally lives elsewhere - and my wife has been nice enough to give me priority for the desktop computer (which is the only place that has a suitable chair and desk and keyboard to write a book at and space for the portable running the VM of WSS 3.0), but only for the time of writing the book, after that I'll be back to the portable(s)) on the sofa.

Anyway that's it for quite a while. Back to the grindstone.

Meanwhile just a couple of hints.

The book will be almost entirely for WSS 3.0 users/administrators/designers even though it occasionally may note if MOSS 2007 does something differently.

It will also be a book that covers a wider spectrum than most of its size and will thus save space for that extra content by going  into the parameters that I find most useful rather than like some books that are already out there going painstakingly through every single option.

In other words it's (so far at least - there's still quite a bit to go) a book I'd like to read.

Pity there are no good jokes.

P.S. Now (2 days later) it IS listed at Amazon US - none of the others yet and for the moment the listing at Amazon US is still full price (29.95) rather than the 19.95 or 24.95 I expect to see there soon). Don't forget the 5% discount on the lowest price between now and the date of availability if ordered early. Mind you November 2008 IS a long time to wait - I hope something can be done to improve that.)

(A short week to get back to schedule)

Note: All of the addresses of the KB / Articles - 2007 Products / MS / Non-MS Articles below were valid at the time I added them to the WSS FAQ
site and to this file. I can't guarantee that they still are.

(This is also posted to the WSS newsgroup at microsoft.public.sharepoint.windowsservices - web access via http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/newsgroups/server/sharepoint.mspx)

(Items are added to the WSS FAQ throughout the week so you will find new items more quickly by checking at wss.collutions.com or www.wssfaq.com daily.)

From 25th - 29th March 2008

NOTE: Amendment to KB articles: Microsoft are now not amending the date of a KB article if the change made is marked as a version point change (so from 2.2 to 2.3 for instance).
This ought to mean that the amendment made is cosmetic rather than important as important text changes ought to result in a major version change (such as from 2.2 to 3.0).
Because of this change and to avoid unnecessary effort I will in future not amend the listings in the WSS FAQ sites if only a minor version change has taken place.
I will continue to amend both the date and version numbers of major version changes and of course will continue to add all relevant new KB articles that my RSS feeds and other sources give me.

III.59 How can I make the link between Web Part Connections a dropdown list rather than the standard radio buttons?

3/25/2008 6:58:56 AM (FLE Standard Time, UTC+02:00)  #    Comments [0]   Other Computer | SharePoint  |
 Friday, March 21, 2008
I did my usual sweep through the Amazon sites to see if any new SharePoint books had were listed or if any of the books I had listed were now being delivered.

I wasn't expecting much actually but I was quite surprised by several things.

The first was that my search threw up a SharePoint book in English that had come out in the beginning of 2007. I've been doing these searches for books on a regular basis so I can't imagine how I could have missed it in all the searches throughout that time.

Perhaps the most pleasant news was that there is at last a third French language original book on SharePoint. I'm pleased at expanding that part of the total list (http://wss.asaris.de/sites/walsh/Lists/WSSv3%20FAQ/V%20Books.aspx) with this.

So pleased in fact I'm going to give you the title and the link so you can order it ...

SharePoint 2007 - Créez votre site collaboratif étape par étape (in French) (Editions ENI - Sandrine Schmitt) from http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/2746041693/wssfaq0fe-21. I wonder about the "etape par etape" (stage by stage) though as that sounds very much like Microsoft Press's "step-by-step.

The next book that makes me happy is that finally the only German language original on SharePoint Designer 2007 (and only the third overall) is finally out.

Again that gets a boost here with the title and the link (to Amazon Germany in this case). Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007 - Das Handbuch (in German) (MSPress Deutschland - Dirk Grasekamp) from http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/3866451083/wssfaq0e-21

It's a good job I checked out the link as it seems two more authors (Michael Greth and Bernhard Straub to be exact) have been added. Must go off to add them. More here later (there are some more new "books" worth mentioning).

OK that's the advert break over. Now what else is interesting?

Well, I've posted before about Amazon US's Kindle device for reading books. Their range of SharePoint books is now up to 10.

What IS interesting is that one of them appears to be one that was written specially for the Kindle format. There seem to be two indications of this a) I can't find it listed anywhere as a book and b) it's much shorter than any of the other SP books.

For those of you in the US (we poor people outside the US can't buy Kindle devices or download content for them), here are the details of just that one.

"Integrating Microsoft Office Access 2007 and Microsoft SharePoint, Digital Shortcut (Kindle Edition) (Pearson Education - Alison Balter)" from http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000P28WQ2/heme0f

They don't actually say how many pages it is, but the topic is one that's hardly covered anywhere else (although I'm planning to cover it in the book I'm writing at the moment) and the price (at 7,99) is more like the sort of price I expect these Kindle "books" to be at.

Oh, yes, and by the way if you are wondering if I'm only plugging that one because it's from Pearson (the company behind the Teach Yourself series), it's just a coincidence. Honest!

P.S. Andrew Connell revealed in his blog this week that his important book on Content Management with MOSS 2007 has been handed over to the publishers and that he is hoping for it to be out in a couple of months. We'll see how that estimate holds up. Meanwhile if you want to pre-order it, here's the Amazon US link. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0470224754/heme0f (You know I hope about the extra 5% deduction on pre-orders? I have myself a Kasparov chess book I would buy anyway on pre-order for delivery in June - what with 5% off because it was in my gold chest offers and 5% off for pre-order, I think they are paying me! ..)

(Oops, more work to do. My price info for that book in the WSS FAQ sites is non-existent. Must do a bit of updating.)

P.P.S. In a sadder note, I saw this week that the date for the Dustin Miller, Heather Solomon book on SPD 2007 had been put back yet again and now was due out, in was it September 2008 (?) Pity, that's about 7 months after the first announced date.

Just over a year ago MVPs were offered a free subscription to the NOD virus-checker application.

The aim of this was no doubt the usual one of getting a product in use by MVPs so that that fact (visibility at demos; "which virus checker are you using") would influence other people to install it too.

There are plenty of free offers open to everyone for limited periods of virus-checker support and so many MVPs including myself thought that this *special* offer might need the MVP in a year to once again prove that he/she still was an MVP, but otherwise the virus checker offer would continue to be in operation.

Well it wasn't. After a year the name/password received no longer worked and no updates came for the software. In the case of normal software that wouldn't matter over-much but in the case of virus software it does, so off I went to look for one of the other free offers - this time the ones for the general public.

Microsoft have a link to a page with all companies providing such a thing and the first snag is that they have "improved" that page so that it no longer says "XXX offers a 3 month free subscription" so you can see at a glance which company offers the longest free subscription but now only has company logos.

Anyway I hadn't used Panda before so I set up a new hotmail address for it and applied and got the free subscription and installed it (and it works). It's for three months.

Only evey day I now get a a message telling me that I still haven't configured the updates (and that it will "shortly cease to update itself").

This is like a Russian doll because if you try to configure the updates, it says you need to register first and if you try to register it won't let you saying that you have specified the wrong application code.

So you check the registration page and there is no place where you can enter an activation code ! So you click on "what is an application code" and it tells you (at the end) that it's something you don't get with a trial version of the product.

So Panda are daily telling me to configure my updates even though they know full well that this is a trial product which I thus can't register and which I thus can't specify updates for.

The next question is what this "will shortly cease to update" means.

Is this a free 3 month trial or not? If it stops updating after a month say, it's a one month's trial in my book.

Time therefore to hate Panda and start checking through the possibilities on the MS page to see which offers the longest free protection. Luckily provided I don't use the same company again, I already have a hotmail address lined up just for it.

P.S. I've now dropped Panda. A week of having pop-ups arriving on an *hourly* basis (yes, even when you said later and got rid of the pop-up it still came back (often) in the same computer session) telling me to specify my upgrade settings (which they ten - see above - wouldn't let me do) was enough. No doubt this is supposed to "encourage" you to pay - me it just made completely MAD at Panda and never want to have anything to do with them again.
We'll see how Kapersky Labs are. There was a good start. They only wanted my e-mail address. Panda wanted full and valid postal address ... The snag is that Kapersky Labs like more of the rest of the free trials is for 30 days only. I'll have to dig out the offer for company employees' home machines even though it is McAfee ....

From 9th - 15th March 2008
