NOTE: Amendment to KB articles: Microsoft are not not amending the date of a KB article if the change made is marked as a version point change (so from 2.2 to 2.3 for instance).
This ought to mean that the amendment made is cosmetic rather than important as important text changes ought to result in a major version change (such as from 2.2 to 3.0).

It's perhaps a bit of a stretch to imagine that everyone knows what a Kindle is so here's a brief explanation.

It's a handheld wireless reader device for books. It's made by Amazon, sold only - as far as I know - in the US, and it's gimmic is that you no longer need to connect the reader to a PC to add content to it, but can receive content wirelessly.

How that fits with the fact that you can buy Kindle editions of books on-line at the Amazon.com site is beyond me and it's even more beyond me why anyone would want to pay the prices (= standard Amazon real book prices) that Amazon wants for them, but there we are.

This note is naturally to say that I've now discovered a bunch of six Kindle editions of SharePoint (2007) books, so I've added a Kindle group (at the bottom) to the books list here

where I list the ones that are already out (another is listed but not yet out and has no pricing, so I'll keep checking for newly released ones on a regular basis).

So if you want to see which books publishers thought were worth putting out in a Kindle edition, look there. Also be warned. I don't list one SharePoint book that is out in a Kindle edition because it is the *2003* version of an almost identical-looking 2007 book (Wrox - Beginning SharePoint 2007 Administration)

NOTE: Amendment to KB articles: Microsoft are not not amending the date of a KB article if the change made is marked as a version point change (so from 2.2 to 2.3 for instance).
This ought to mean that the amendment made is cosmetic rather than important as important text changes ought to result in a major version change (such as from 2.2 to 3.0).

It looks very likely that my last day at work before going on a long (and highly deserved!) holiday will not be the tidying up loose ends that I thought it would be. Instead it's going to be filled with activities designed to give me a working PC when I start work again after the holiday.

The powers-that-be decided quite reasonably that we should move to a common domain for the entire company rather than the one we had which was for our old pre-buyout company. So internal IT decided to make this change as easy as possible for its users and automated the process.

It works well I suppose if the only software you have on your computer is the standard company software and it's located in the place that the internal IT specified. But - well you can probably guess what's coming - I don't exactly only have company standard software installed on my work PC so the method they chose to do this "automatic" change didn't exactly (to say the least) work for me.

My guess is that what they have done is to wipe out entire swathes of the registry and replace them with their standard values for their standard software.

I can't think of any other reason why every single piece of non-standard software that I have on that PC, seems to think it's being started for the first time.

.... and I have a lot.

So Thunderbird which I use for newsgroups needs once again to be defined with a sig file; and replies above the quote and the sig file below the reply (which oddly are not the defaults). Plus of course that I need to subscribe to all the newsgroups again including those private ones that need a password.

Firefox doesn't remember any Tags and doesn't remember any favourites.

Even Internet Explorer - where I'm still using the company standard IE6 on this machine - doesn't remember Favourites.

Zinio no longer is licensed to read the digital magazines I've already downloaded - so PC Magazine goes. (Yes you can fix it but the usual fix relies on looking in the registry ...)

One Note 2007 doesn't have any of my Notebooks opened so they all need to be found and opened again.

Even Outlook 2007 didn't work at first because the system was writing in the wrong Exchange Server for me and what was worse was giving the wrong form of my name (but one "Walsh, Michael" that looked reasonable). So I found the correct Exchange Server name and it still didn't work until I realised that it was actually saying that Walsh, Michael didn't exist and so I needed to search on just Walsh (and select me and not my son!) for the correct form.  (I discovered at the same time that the company standard is still Office 2003, oops)

I'm sure there are more things ahead but those are the ones so far.

However, can I really blame the internal IT ? Probably not, after all as a colleague pointed out "it's their PC, Mike".
