Mike Walsh's WSS and more - Saturday, January 26, 2008

 Saturday, January 26, 2008

Special Note: the next posting will be on the 23rd of February 2008

Note: All of the addresses of the KB / Articles - 2007 Products / MS / Non-MS Articles below were valid at the time I added them to the WSS FAQ
site and to this file. I can't guarantee that they still are.

(This is also posted to the WSS newsgroup at microsoft.public.sharepoint.windowsservices - web access via http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/newsgroups/server/sharepoint.mspx)

(Items are added to the WSS FAQ throughout the week so you will find new items more quickly by checking at wss.collutions.com or www.wssfaq.com daily.)

From 20th - 26th January 2008

NOTE: Amendment to KB articles: Microsoft are not not amending the date of a KB article if the change made is marked as a version point change (so from 2.2 to 2.3 for instance).
This ought to mean that the amendment made is cosmetic rather than important as important text changes ought to result in a major version change (such as from 2.2 to 3.0).
Because of this change and to avoid unnecessary effort I will in future not amend the listings in the WSS FAQ sites if only a minor version change has taken place.
I will continue to amend both the date and version numbers of major version changes and of course will continue to add all relevant new KB articles that my RSS feeds and other sources give me.

The reason I'm asking this is because I've just received a TechNet Flash email from Microsoft in which there is a plug for "Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Inside Out".

(Amazon US: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0735623236/heme0f - Amazon UK: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0735623236/heme)

yet while it's true that this is recently out, my experience with earlier Inside Out books that I have seen (on other topics it's true) is that they are rather bland and - dare I as an MVP say it - "follow the party line".

Now I've not seen this particular Inside Out book but given a choice between the two general SharePoint v3 books that came out recently, that isn't the one I would go for.

Instead I'd pick C.A. Callahan's "Mastering Windows SharePoint Services 3.0"

(Amazon US: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0470127287/heme0f - Amazon UK: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0470127287/heme)

because based on her replies to many questions in the public SharePoint newsgroups she has delved deeply into the product during the time she was writing the book.

In other words I expect somewhat more than the party line from her.

P.S. Who is "Errin O'Connor" anyway ?

P.P.S. The above general comments about MS Press books *are* general and they apply mainly to the more general series.

I imagine that for Developers both "Inside Windows SharePoint Services 3.0" (which I've seen)

(Amazon US: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0735623201/heme0f - Amazon UK: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0735623201/heme)

and "Inside Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007" (which I haven't seen)

(Amazon US: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0735623686/heme0f - Amazon UK: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0735623686/heme)

offer as much depth as any of the developer books that don't come from Microsoft Press.

I have a confession to make.

A long, long (very long) time ago before I had even heard the word SharePoint I had set up a WebSphere server for a customer.

This was so long ago that that was the only IBM product called "WebSphere" and it was quite a few years later that IBM decided they liked the name so much they would rename a lot of totally unrelated products "WebSphere" and thus make a family of products.

(Something IBM do often. The last invitational golf tournament I attended at IBM Finland's invitation was the last one because in the sauna afterwards I made a comment about the DB2 family not being a real family because the various DB2 products for different platforms were (at the time?) built on different code bases. My supply of free golf balls - at invitational tournaments they aways supplied you with half a dozen free golf balls at the start and more halfway through if you claimed you had lost most of the first six - dried up immediately afterwards.)

(Microsoft is not immune either. Remember SharePoint Team Services ? It had nothing to do with SharePoint Portal Server 2001 except for the "SharePoint" in the name ...)

Anyway, WebSphere, yes.

Occasionally it pops up as either a competitor to SharePoint or as something that a customer that also has a SharePoint product installed also has installed. (In one case I know of because the package solution to something that that company was using was built on top of WebSphere.).

Hence the occasional need for the two to work together.

and at this point we have the old problem of the chicken and the egg - Microsoft (except it seems if it is SAP) don't want to ease their product's working with an IBM competitor product and IBM think exactly the same in reverse.

So it's up to a third-party to grab the niche and in this case that third party is MainSoft.

I've added their "SharePoint Federator for WebSphere Portal" product to the WSS FAQ's list of commercial v3 products here

http://wss.asaris.de/sites/walsh/Lists/WSSv3%20FAQ/DispForm.aspx?ID=1316

so go there if you have a dominant WebSphere Portal product with lots of department level SharePoint sites.

(Because unfortunately that's the niche Mainsoft chose. Now I would have liked to see a product that integrated that unimportant WebSphere stuff into a dominant SharePoint system ....)

If you ignore the SPD 2007 book that Amazon once said was out only for it to first be rapidly marked as out of stock and then later as Pre-Order, then the first (real?) SharePoint Designer 2007 book of the few expected in the next few months is now out and can be ordered at both the Amazon US

Price (Jan 2008): $ 16.49

and the Amazon UK

Price (Jan 2008): £ 10.55

sites

heck, even the Amazon Germany site has it as available

Price (Jan 2008): € 18,99

even though Amazon Canada thinks it's still not out.

But anyway there's plenty of different places to find it.

and the title ..... ?

Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007 Step by Step (MSPress - Penelope Coventry)

It (and the one coming in a few months from Dustin Miller and Heather Solomon) is on my list for sure.

I've just installed Windows Server 2008 RC1 on a VM in order to see what I need to do to get "WSS 3.0+SP1" to work on it.

I first installed Windows Server 2008 months ago and I don't remember thinking that it was any different (or in typical MS words "a different installation experience") to installing Windows Server 2003 and then adding WSS 3.0.

Maybe my memory is going but I certainly think I would remember some of the decisions I needed to make this time.

This post by the way is only going to be an "as I remember" post. I can see that I'm going to have to install this thing many many times with different parameters before I can get a real grasp of what is really needed before you install WSS 3.0.

The first choice is that you can decide between Core functions only and Full. Now I don't know about you, but I had no idea whether installing Core functions only would mean that WSS 3.0 would install or run or not, so I installed Full.

That in turn just lies there (at first not accepting that I have network connection until I re-boot it but that's maybe because it was installed in a VM) and you need to specify the Applications Server role.

Now that was all you needed to do with Windows Server 2003 before running the .Net Framework install and installing WSS 3.0, but now with 2008 it *appears* that this doesn't include IIS support and so you are - shall we say - "encouraged" to install "Web Services (IIS)" (some such name) as well.

Around this point you are presented with sub-menus for those two main things and, yes, I did click a few things almost at random (well they looked as if I might need them).

Also at some point around here (maybe one of those sub-menus in fact) you could X for the installation of .NET Framework 3.0, so that's no longer a seperate install but is part of Windows Server 2008.

Anyway all that lot was set to churn around for a while and eventually was done and (with or without a re-boot ? I must really learn to write these things down) then I could run the standard "WSS 3.0+SP1" installation after which I had of course the configuration wizard phase and after that (perhaps not "of course") a working WSS 3.0 default site.

I'm ashamed to say that although I "could" run the standard '"WSS 3.0+SP1" installation' what I actually first tried to run (and twice too) was the WSS 3.0 SP1 download which not surprisingly didn't find a product it could update and posted a message to that effect. My excuse is that this installation was working on a Mac behind my back while I was also doing work on my work machine and thus I was distracted, but TWICE ??

So there you have it. Obviously I'm going to have to do this install again and write down exactly what I installed. Then once more missing one thing out and seeing if the installation still went through (and so on). I'll also need to do this for both the core and the full version - although I think I'll go to hunt for some documentation on the core version first, I'm not that mad.

So lot's of "fun" ahead and by the time I've finished I'll have to do it all again for the RTM version.

P.S. I first tried to install this on VMWare Fusion (which is the Mac equivalent of VMWare workstation) and it complained about missing drivers and wouldn't install. So I installed it in Parallels and there at the same point in the install it just went straight to the screen that asked for the MSDN code. Thus proving that sometimes it is good to have two completely different sets of Virtual Machine software available even though the machine has fits if one VM from each system is running at the same time (but that might well be caused by memory shortages as it doesn't exactly crash).

P.P.S. Later: (much later) A fellow MVP confirmed that WSS 3.0 would install on the core system. Something about not being able to install .Net Framework on the core version. So what *can* you do with the core version I wonder ?

 Tuesday, January 15, 2008

I have a lot of admiration for the SBS 2003 MVPs as this requires knowledge of a vast quantity of Microsoft products combined with how they work together in the SBS 2003 environment.

I don't however have much time for some of the people who post questions about WSS 2.0 or WSS 3.0 *running on SBS 2003* in a SharePoint newsgroup as at least half the time their problems derive from the fact that they are running either WSS product in a SBS 2003 environment (and some of them arise just from an SBS 2003 environment and have nothing really to do with WSS at all - think network connections)

But I still have to read their questions and decide for myself whether the answer is a universal one that would also apply to WSS 2.0/3.0 in a Windows 2003 Server environment or not, which needs at least a minimal amount of knowledge about what you get in SBS 2003.

So (preamble over) I was interested to see a Redmond Channel Partner article (Jan 2008 edition) about what the next "SBS" product will include.

The Standard edition has:

Windows Server 2008; Exchange Server 2007 and System Center Essentials for Management with ISA Server (version not specified) and Forefront Security for Exchange

The Enterprise edition is the Standard edition plus SQL Server 2008.

So it's based on Windows Server 2008, which is one reason why it's still in beta.

But where's Windows SharePoint Services ? I presume it isn't "missing in action" and all this means is that just as with Windows Server 2008 itself, WSS will no longer be bundled with "SBS xxxx" but you will just use the standard download the rest of us use.

This will be a "Good Thing" as hopefully this means that running WSS xxxx (to start with no doubt WSS 3.0) or even MOSS 2007 on SBS xxxx will be identical to running it on Windows server 2008. **** But see below - Late News ***

I certainly hope so as then I can just ignore whether someone has SBS xxxx or (directly) Windows Server 2008 as their platform and just get on with answering the question if I can.

P.S. The other news from that article is that from being a single server solution for a maximum of 75 users (SBS 2003), SBS xxxx can be run on up to three servers to divide the load.

Oddly enough though there is no mention of any new maximum number of users, nor is there any mention that 64-bit machines will be needed. At least I presume so (64-bit machines that is) because doesn't Exchange 2007 require them *and* a 64-bit OS ?

P.P.S. The new name is said to be "Windows Essential Business Server". We'll see if it makes it to RTM with that name. Somehow WEBS is a bit off.  *** But see below "slightly later news" ***

Late news: Wayne in the first comment here said that the Beta of SBS 2008 does include WSS 3.0. So it's just the guy who wrote that RCP article who didn't think it worthwhile mentioning ... Shame on you !

Slightly later news (note to myself: don't ever write anything on SBS ....): Handy Andy's comment is that

The "EBS or EBS Essential Busness Server (was code named Centro)"mentioned above "is not the next version of SBS, it is a new Mid Market Multi-Server product for folks getting too big for SBS, it will have a limit in the range of 250-300 seats (still not set in stone from my understanding)"

He adds

"For more on EBS http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/presskits/ServerSolutions/businessserver.mspx"

There was an earlier thread about trying to save copies of streaming videos from zdf.de for viewing in weeks where I had more time. There the thread was mainly about why paying to upgrade QuickTime to QuickTime Pro to get a Save Video function didn't help.

Later I discovered that the basic (old) methods work - but only in one case, which is odd. What follows below started out as a comment to that earlier blog but simply became too long.

------------

What's even odder is that in one XPPro system (Murphy's Law means it's the slowest machine in the house) I can find the .mov file in the Internet Explorer cache and can copy it across to another place in the file system and play it.

In Vista and in the dual-booted XPPro on that machine, the .mov file (theoretically created in the same way by running the video in Quick Time to the end) doesn't appear.

(and, Yes, I have checked the locations - the only difference is that where it IS working I've changed the default location in IE; where it isn't working I haven't).

Thinks: could it be that the old IEPro is IE6 and the new IE7 ??

P.S. Of course my Mac knowledge is such that I haven't a clue where to look for the Safari cache !

P.P.S. Yesterday my Internet access was down so I decided that this was a perfect opportunity to go to that IE6 machine and play back the .mov file. Guess what !? It didn't work. It turned out that was a stub too ... Ah well, back to the drawing board.

I've been exchanging e-mails with a fellow SharePoint MVP who works for Newsgator muttering about the Newsgator Online service having abandoned its "Classic" look and gone completely with their "faster" (= not for me) Beta version. A couple of days ago he advised me to go to http://www.newsgator.com/Individuals/Default.aspx and sign up for both Feed Demon for my Vista portable and NetNewsWire for my Mac, both of which had become free to use (as Newsgator Online always was).

My counter for that was that the reason I was using Newsgator Online was because I could switch machines (including work machines) when using that because things I'd read on the Vista machine (or work machine) were no longer visible on the Mac (and vice versa). He assured me that there would be synchronization between Feed Demon and NetNewsWire so I thought I'd give them a try.

Having first thought I was on the Mac (which shows how Tiger and Vista can have a similar feel to them - but probably more likely just shows I wasn't properly awake [I had both the Mac and the Vista switched on as the Mac was running my WSS 3.0 site but was actually using the Vista machine]) I finally stopped wondering why NetNewsWire didn't want to install and instead installed Feed Demon.

I had of course the standard "do you want us a) to give you some sample feeds b) no feeds c) import some feeds and I decided to import my many existing feeds from Newsgator Online by doing an Export to OPML and using that file to import into Feed Demon. I then spent a good 15 mins going through all the options in Newsgator Online only to find that in this beta look (now the only one you have) you CAN'T export your feeds to an OPML file. You can Import but that was of no use to me.

So I was left with the choice of no feeds or give me some sample feeds. A toss-up really, but I went for "some sample feeds" and was somewhat amazed to find that the sample feeds it had generated were in fact my Newsgator On-line feeds. Unfortunately with a lot of additional rubbish as well, but still.

So I was happy - or was I ?

I was until I went back to Newsgator On-line and found that it too had miraculously acquired all those other rubbish feeds from Feed Demon.

So as a result and rather sooner than expected I'm going to have to spend the next hour or so removing all those rubbishy feeds from Feed Demon (or Online?) so that I can use one of these things without that baggage.

In fact, on second thoughts (isn't it a good thing I decided to write this blog article as otherwise I wouldn't have thought about it) I'm going to install the Mac NetNewsWire first and then remove the rubbishy feeds - otherwise no doubt I'm going to have to do that all over again.

In the long run of course this synchronization among the three products is a real boom - I'll probably only use Newsgator On-line in future when in Internet Cafés (= never or rather hardly ever)

P.S. The NetNewsWire implementation was awful. (Looked nice but was a pig to use sensibly) so I was forced to remove it from the machine completely (as even URLs to forum messages entered into Safari were being opened there rather than in Safari so I could only read them and not reply to them).
