Mike Walsh's WSS and more - Monday, January 07, 2008

 Monday, January 07, 2008
Sometimes it's useful to have actually read the documentation before you do things. Sometimes even that doesn't help if you don't have your wits about you.

I knew that in order to upgrade a MOSS 2007 installation to SP1 you need first of all to install the WSS 3.0 SP1 *files* - that is you do NOT run the SharePoint configuration wizard.

So I ran the WSS 3.0 SP1 installation .exe and prepared to get the page that has a cross at the bottom left hand corner which selects "run the SharePoint confiugration wizard" and when that page arrived I was prepared to un-select it before ending the installation.

Needless to say that page didn't come. Instead I got a page that said "This wizard will upgrade ...."; Next to continue or Cancel.

This left me in a bit of a quandry. Would Next just go to a Page where I had the check box I was expecting, or would it immediately run the wizard ? Would Cancel back-out the "installation" of all those files or would it leave them in the system ?

The page didn't help me decide what would happen so I went for the safe option and pressed Cancel. After all I could re-do the (file) installation if it did back it out.

As it happens, it doesn't. Cancel just means "Don't run the configuration wizard". Isn't it a pity they don't say so instead of writing "cancel to exit the wizard" which leaves you in some doubts as to which wizard they mean and at what stage you are exiting.

That done and with the WSS 3.0 SP1 installation files on the server, I set off to run the MOSS 2007 SP1 installation.

Now I know I should have known better but when - as usual - I went to the Download section of the Articles - 2007 Products part of the WSS FAQ site looking for this, I looked for all combinations of MOSS 2007 SP1.

It doesn't exist of course. MS in their wisdom have a common Service Pack 1 for "Office Servers" (MOSS, Project; Groove) and eventually I remembered this and couldn't find it under that name either ! So a search of the page for SP1 and there it was "The 2007 Microsoft Office Servers Service Pack 1 (SP1)". Somehow looking under "The 2007" in the view that was sorted by Name wasn't obvious.

Anyway there it was. I set it going knowing that if the WSS 3.0 SP1 files weren't already there there'd be an error message. There wasn't. The Office Servers SP1 installed *its* files on the server and now again there was the Next = run wizard page.

This time I wanted to run it and (crossing my fingers) set it going.

After all the above (and naturally the earlier copy of a working MOSS 2007 VM just in case the upgrade crashed in flames), it's perhaps a disappointment to you all to hear that the upgrade worked successfully.

So, sorry, once again I can't help people whose upgrades have gone wrong at some stage in the wizard routine.

P.S. But, once again, not that sad :)

(For the moment I've also left them in the Non-SP Books section, but this may change)

Sometimes Microsoft works in strange ways.

This paper http://technet2.microsoft.com/Office/logredir.aspx?MODE=CT&CTT=ToExternal&target=%2FOffice%2Flogredir.aspx%3FMODE%3DCT%26CTT%3DToExternal%26target%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fgo.microsoft.com%252Ffwlink%252F%253FLinkId%253D105704%2526clcid%253D0x409%26referrer%3 is an example of this.

Theoretically it's a white paper about the recent Service Pack Ones for WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007.

Now I don't know about you, but my understanding of White papers are that they are much longer than the 3 whole (actually more like 2 and a bit) pages taken up by this "white paper".

They also tend not to be a place to announce things. But I'm getting ahead of myself ...

The paper has five sections.

"About Service Pack 1" isn't. It's a very brief list of what's in it and a few links to more information.

"Installation on Windows Server 2008" is also short but does include essential information both about which version of WSS 3.0 you have to use in order to install on the latest (RC1) version of Windows Server 2008 at all and about needing to upgrade to the Windows Internal Database SP2 if you are running the version of WSS 3.0 that uses the included "Windows Internal Database" - something (WID SP2) which, as they point out, isn't out yet!! (Which makes you wonder why they include this confusing piece of information in this version of this "white paper" - at less than 3 full pages it wouldn't be too much effort to write a new version when Windows Internal Database SP2 is out, would it?

"ASP.NET AJAX compatibility and support" just says that you can now use AJAX to create Web parts and where to get the control kit from. The "support" part of the heading is the totally useless "you can get help from Microsoft customer support". Where; How ??

"New Stsadm operations and properties" just gives links (which it repeats for WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007 - to make it past the end of page 2?) to the couple (three in the case of MOSS 2007) of new stsadm functions.

"Recommendations for 64-bit hardware" is even shorter than any of the above sections and yet it includes the important statement that WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007 are the last SharePoint versions able to run on 32-bit hardware and operating systems.

It's a mystery to me why the announcement of this has been hidden away in what is virtually a footnote to a white paper that isn't, but there you are, as I started this piece, Microsoft sometimes works in strange ways.

 Thursday, December 27, 2007

I got one of the these days fairly rare comments to the Collutions site (wss.collutions.com) and this time it was asking if I could I do anything about the amount of stuff that is being accessed when the "Articles - 2007 Products" default page is being loaded.

My first reaction was to think that I'd in effect already solved this in the mirror site (wss.wssfaq.com) by splitting off the Web Casts (and similar) from the Articles - 2007 Products list into their own list (thus reducing the total number of items in the list) and that - because the Collutions site was about to have a re-vamp anyway (including a long overdue move to being based on WSS 3.0) - any change could wait.

However today, I thought "why don't I give him something in the meantime?" and made a "Latest 20" View which is restricted (entirely) to 20 items and made that the default view.

At first sight it didn't seem to make that much difference. A bit snappier maybe but not excessively so. But then I started adding New items to the list (which of course meant that every time an item was added the default page was opened) and suddenly that snappiness started to really mean something.

Now, despite having had sites that use the SharePoint products since early 2002, I've never really seen the point of that final option for Item Limit when creating a View ("Limit the total number of items returned to the specified amount") because I always so far have wanted to be able to click on Next and see some more. Well now I do. Snappiness!

I noticed that one of the Google ads on the WSS FAQ posting here said

Get Ready for SPS 2007

Migrate your website and documents to MOSS 2007 with Metalogix

Given that there is no "SPS 2007", it's hard to have much confidence in Metalogix's expereince with Sharepoint. If they can't even get the name right ....

Later: The title of the Metalogix Google add has been changed to "Migrate to MOSS 2007" ....  Coincidence ?

(Here's copy and paste at its best - or worst)

Microsoft give you a KB article with a list of issues that have been fixed in MOSS 2007 SP1, however about 30% of those fixes are not actually listed in the article !

Instead Microsoft just give you a list of all the KB articles and titles which earlier contained the hot-fixes which are now included in SP1. As these KB articles have Titles like "Description of the SharePoint Server 2007 hotfix package - June 29 2007" they aren't much use.

So to avoid everyone having to go in to each of those (16) earlier "Description of .." articles, I've expanded them all and added them to the list of new fixes from the MS Issues that are fixed .. paper to give a complete list of all the problems that the MOSS 2007 SP1 contains fixes for.

It's here

http://wss.asaris.de/sites/walsh/Lists/WSSv3%20FAQ/DispForm.aspx?ID=1298

P.S. I suspect that in order to have everything that has been fixed in MOSS 2007 SP1, you also - in addition to this FAQ item - also need to look at the equivalent item for WSS 3.0 SP1 (http://wss.asaris.de/sites/walsh/Lists/WSSv3%20FAQ/DispForm.aspx?ID=1297)

After all in order to upgrade MOSS 2007 to SP1 level you need to install both the WSS 3.0 SP1 upgrade *and* the MOSS 2007 SP1 upgrade.

In a perfect world, I'd combine those two lists into one, but for now (and maybe for ever) you're going to have to search both of them.

First to wrap up my review of the User's Guide book.

Yes, it's clear that it's target audience is Users who have had a site set up for them (as one correspondent mentioned).

Yes, too, it is very bland and hardly makes any "do this", "don't do this" recommendations (as another correspondent mentioned).

Despite occasional glimpses of user level guidance (for instance in the workflow section there are a couple of "how do I do this" examples), the book does not to my mind cover the "Learning ..." which is one of the three key "check items" included in the title.

It does more than justify the "comprehensive guidebook" second "check item" however. That this wasn't a source of joy for me doesn't remove my respect for the time taken by the writers to catalog everything in sight.

As for a User's Guide (third check item - and probably the buzz word which is selling this book), I am by no means sure. I would want my users to have a feel for what they should use a SharePoint site for in real life. I personally don't think this is achieved by giving them a complete list of all template types; list types etc. with full details as to which fields etc. are available/listed. It takes a special kind of user to want to wade through this amount of detail and an even more special kind of user to be able to feel anything less than overwhelmed (and very likely that "I don't want to have anything to do with this monster").

Anyway the book now has to go back to the library as time is almost up and it can't be renewed because someone else is waiting for it. Hopefully they gain more out of it than I did.

After that it's a pleasure to report that the third chapter of RealWorld SharePoint 2007 - which is Todd Klindt on SharePoint v3 Administration - is very good and immediately useful. I especially liked the part on using stsadm which was full of practical hints. (Something sadly lacking in the User's Guide book. Or did I say that already :) )
