(Here's copy and paste at its best - or worst)

Microsoft give you a KB article with a list of issues that have been fixed in MOSS 2007 SP1, however about 30% of those fixes are not actually listed in the article !

Instead Microsoft just give you a list of all the KB articles and titles which earlier contained the hot-fixes which are now included in SP1. As these KB articles have Titles like "Description of the SharePoint Server 2007 hotfix package - June 29 2007" they aren't much use.

So to avoid everyone having to go in to each of those (16) earlier "Description of .." articles, I've expanded them all and added them to the list of new fixes from the MS Issues that are fixed .. paper to give a complete list of all the problems that the MOSS 2007 SP1 contains fixes for.

It's here

http://wss.asaris.de/sites/walsh/Lists/WSSv3%20FAQ/DispForm.aspx?ID=1298

P.S. I suspect that in order to have everything that has been fixed in MOSS 2007 SP1, you also - in addition to this FAQ item - also need to look at the equivalent item for WSS 3.0 SP1 (http://wss.asaris.de/sites/walsh/Lists/WSSv3%20FAQ/DispForm.aspx?ID=1297)

After all in order to upgrade MOSS 2007 to SP1 level you need to install both the WSS 3.0 SP1 upgrade *and* the MOSS 2007 SP1 upgrade.

In a perfect world, I'd combine those two lists into one, but for now (and maybe for ever) you're going to have to search both of them.

First to wrap up my review of the User's Guide book.

Yes, it's clear that it's target audience is Users who have had a site set up for them (as one correspondent mentioned).

Yes, too, it is very bland and hardly makes any "do this", "don't do this" recommendations (as another correspondent mentioned).

Despite occasional glimpses of user level guidance (for instance in the workflow section there are a couple of "how do I do this" examples), the book does not to my mind cover the "Learning ..." which is one of the three key "check items" included in the title.

It does more than justify the "comprehensive guidebook" second "check item" however. That this wasn't a source of joy for me doesn't remove my respect for the time taken by the writers to catalog everything in sight.

As for a User's Guide (third check item - and probably the buzz word which is selling this book), I am by no means sure. I would want my users to have a feel for what they should use a SharePoint site for in real life. I personally don't think this is achieved by giving them a complete list of all template types; list types etc. with full details as to which fields etc. are available/listed. It takes a special kind of user to want to wade through this amount of detail and an even more special kind of user to be able to feel anything less than overwhelmed (and very likely that "I don't want to have anything to do with this monster").

Anyway the book now has to go back to the library as time is almost up and it can't be renewed because someone else is waiting for it. Hopefully they gain more out of it than I did.

After that it's a pleasure to report that the third chapter of RealWorld SharePoint 2007 - which is Todd Klindt on SharePoint v3 Administration - is very good and immediately useful. I especially liked the part on using stsadm which was full of practical hints. (Something sadly lacking in the User's Guide book. Or did I say that already :) )

Microsoft give you a KB article with a list of issues that have been fixed in WSS 3.0 SP1, however about 35% of those fixes are not actually listed in the article !

Instead Microsoft just give you a list of all the KB articles and titles which earlier contained the hot-fixes which are now included in SP1. As these KB articles have Titles like "Description of the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 hotfix package - June 29 2007" that isn't much use.

So to avoid everyone having to go in to each of those (15 - of which one is actually a duplicate as it's embedded in another one) earlier "Description of .." articles, I've expanded them all and added them to the list of new fixes from the MS Issues that are fixed .. paper to give a complete list of all the problems that the WSS 3.0 SP1 contains fixes for.

It's here

(The MOSS equivalent will be on its way when my fingers stop hurting....)

Like anyone else I'm happy when an application update goes smoothly. But in my case with WSS 3.0 SP1 this happiness is tempered *a bit* by the fact that because it went smoothly I am unable to give any assistance in the newsgroups to people whose upgrade to SP1 did not go smoothly.

(I think, though, on balance that I prefer it to work for me ....)

Anyway here is the sum total of what I did.

1. Took my slightly out-of-date (as far as the information in the Lists/Libs go) copy of a WSS 3.0 VM (running with 1GB of memory) and installed WSS 3.0 SP1.

It worked.

(At this point I checked the version number in Site Settings and updated my FAQ item with version numbers)

2. I turned that VM off and started the original WSS 3.0 VM (with up-to-date lists/libs = WSS 3.0 versions of the V3-related lists from the WSS FAQ site, which is still v2-based).

First I did the poor man's backup (but fast) by just Saving all four Lists as Template (with content) - so I could recover to my copied VM that I'd already updated.

Then I updated the original WSS 3.0 VM. That worked too.

(Note: I always do this kind of upgrade by accessing www.wssfaq.com to get at the download link. It saves time compared to going to the MS download site and searching)

So there you are. It IS possible to upgrade WSS 3.0 to WSS 3.0 SP1 with no grief.

P.S. A semi-related warning. If you are upgrading MOSS 2007 to SP1 level, you need to run both the WSS 3.0 SP1 and then the MOSS 2007 SP1. That's I suspect common knowledge and you probably don't need to be warned about it.

What however you may need warning about is that that installation means that you run the WSS 3.0 SP1 but then uncheck the "run the configuration wizard" box. You then run the MOSS 2007 SP1 and only then (with both SP1s "installed" on your server) do you run the configuration wizard.

It says it somewhere in the documentation, but it's easy to miss so perhaps it's worth the warning here. Even if it only saves one person's grief it'll be worth my spending the extra time needed to mention it.

Note: All of the addresses of the KB / Articles - 2007 Products / MS / Non-MS Articles below were valid at the time I added them to the WSS FAQ

I skimmed through Chapters 5 (List) and 6 (Libraries) of the User's Guide yesterday.

They were more of the same.

Detailed descriptions of List and Library templates as supplied. Not much more.

This book is really hard to recommend even for its presumed audience. The only questions it really answers (if we ignore the Note:, Info:, and Caution: bits I mentioned last time) are things like "I see xxx template listed, if I click on this what kind of a site/list does it create for me and what are the default fields it uses?" So why not just click on it and see for yourself ?

That's it. I'm not even going to add any Google ads ...

Chapter 4 is List concepts and so it's reasonably something I should know well.

So it didn't take long to review it and see that it was "more of the same" or in other words an incredible amount of detail with only the Ocassional "Note"; "Tip"; or (very occasional) "Caution" to prove that the writers do actually know quite a lot about SharePoint rather than being only people who have painstakingly gone through every function (and screen) in a SharePoint system and catalogued every detail. (That, unfortunately, is the abiding impression as there is just too much detail and not enough insights).

One of the things I was glad to see was the advice (in a "Tip") to perhaps not use folders - in fact Folders were given just over a page, which in a book like this is unusually little.

There were only two things I didn't like about this Tip. Firstly it wasn't a clear "Don't Use Folders, Use Views" Tip and Secondly the tip didn't mention Views at all.

Here's the text of the Tip. What do you think of it?

"Instead of using folders to organize a list, have the manager of the list create custom columns you can use to categorize the list items. This is generally seen as the more appropriate way to organize information in SharePoint and supports more robust display options and searching."

Bit wishy-washy isn't it ("generally seen as the most appropriate way") and what do you usually do when you have create one or more custom columns ? That's right, you create Views that use them. So why not say so?

Another Note (in this case), that I was glad to see there, was one that mentioned that with Excel 2007, you can't (as you could with the SharePoint 2003 products and Excel 2003) synchronize modifications back to a SharePoint List (when you have a list linked to Excel). It's useful to have this clearly stated.

In summary though, more a detailed list of what the SharePoint 2007 Lists contain than the learning book at least part of the Title of the book promised.

A quick check of the Amazon.de site expecting to find no changes and certainly no new books brought both.

This: Office SharePoint Server 2007 und Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. Das Lösungsbuch für Administratoren und Entwickler(in German) (Galileo Computing - Ulrich B. Boddenberg) http://wss.asaris.de/sites/walsh/Lists/WSSv3%20FAQ/DispForm.aspx?ID=1074 is now released and in stock at Amazon.de

There's also a new translation announced from English. Interesting because I far as I can remember the English version isn't available on the streets yet.

That's this one: Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 - Das Handbuch (in German) (MSPress Deutschland - Erin O'Connor) http://wss.asaris.de/sites/walsh/Lists/WSSv3%20FAQ/DispForm.aspx?ID=1283

Finally there's a new German language original book: Unternehmensprozesse optimieren mit SharePoint - Das 'Prozesshaus'-Modell (in German) (MSPress Deutschland - Helmut Reinke , Andrea Monadjemi, Dagmar Herzog) which if my interpretation of the title (Optimising Company processes with SharePoint - the "Process House" model) is correct is likely to be a very worthy and totally unreadable book that will however sell to that section of the book-buying community who like having worthy sounding books in their bookshelf at the office.

That at least is what my experience of working in Germany is screaming at me when I see that title. If you want to send me a copy when it's out (!) it's here. http://wss.asaris.de/sites/walsh/Lists/WSSv3%20FAQ/DispForm.aspx?ID=1284

But even with that excluded, German speakers are doing well for German language books and there are more to come in the next few months

Here's my posting from mid August after I installed WSS 3.0 on Windows Server 2003 R2.

-----------

A while back and long enough ago for me to manage to forget the details, I had the problem that having done a basic installation of WSS 3.0, I could only access the site from within the VM itself.

Today I had the same thing. Access from within the VM OK but from everywhere else it was blocked (although I could ping the server). It didn't work over the network and not even from the mother PC.

...and I'd set AAM so it wasn't that. (That I *do* remember).

Several screaming bouts later and several breaks (hoping that moving from the computer would help) later and I started looking through my old blogs (Google Search specifying the blog's URL) for something I thought I'd written on this first time around.

Despite knowing that it had something to do with Windows Server 2003 *R2*, I couldn't find a thing.

So I wander through the VM and find **Windows Firewall**.

Turn that b***** thing off and I'm OK. I can access from everywhere.

Anyone who wants to call R2 an improvement over the original version has my fist heading in their direction

--------------

Today I had exactly the same problem after installing Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition SP2 and then (correctly) WSS 3.0.

I guess MS have "improved" that product too - yes, sir, no security problems with your sites if you don't let anyone access them!

Despite all my intentions of skipping to chapter 7, I thought I'd better at least glance through chapter 3 which is the MOSS 2007 equivalent of the chapter two I really hated.

It just shows how much previous experience counts for when you make comments on the quality (or not) of books.

In this case I know WSS 3.0 well so the listing with a picture of every single different template type did not go down well.

I don't however know MOSS 2007 half so well and so the identical listing of every single template type with screen shot in Chapter 3 gave me a very quick overview of what is included in MOSS 2007.

However the main point from chapter 2 remains. I'm not a User so even if Chapter 3 was OK for me, it was still OK only because of my experience of using WSS 3.0 a lot as an Administrator (and user). I still don't think that the typical new user is well served by what in effect is a List of all templates even if it includes a screen shot of each one. Even I found the list per template of exactly which Lists it contains to be no more than a page-filler and far too much detail.

So in conclusion, despite me gaining something from chapter 3, this book continues to be a long list of what is in WSS 3.0 or MOSS 2007 and not a learning tool. It is however selling well but how much that is down to it being the only book out there that says it is for "Users" and how much it's due to the content is another question.
