The first thing is the Subject.

This should be completely meaningless. "Help!" is good.

Even if you decide to say something more meaningful here, NEVER say which SharePoint Product you are using. (This applies to the text too - we love making guesses and we love even more giving alternative answers).

Then - even if this is your first posting - start it with "Hello friends".

In order to really encourage us to answer the question, carry on by making sure we are aware that you work for a non-profit organisation or the US military. The latter really encourages SharePoint experts based in muslim countries to respond to your question.

Then you have two choices.

a) post your entire log file as the rest of your message

b) post your question in a long sentence with no punctuation and never use any Capital letters and if possible use as many SMS-type words - "u" for instance - as possible.

Finally end your question with a sentence like

"Please help me!"

It's a well-known fact that people only answer questions in newsgroups if they are asked specifically with this kind of sentence to provide help.

(even more efficient is of course "PLEASE HELP ME!")

Let's see - did I miss anything?

Well there's always if you are a non-native English speaker who can write clear English anyway, always make a point of apologising for your English. Never do this if your English is terrible. Oh, and of course, the English language newsgroups really love having messages posted to them in Spanish.

I'm still stuck with the problem that (in Central Administration / Application Management / Reporting Services section) I can't open the Set Server Defaults section without it crashing with a long - but to me meaningless - message.

That despite the fact that I was able to compare my steps so far with Part One of (now MVP) Laim Cleary's old sharepoint blogs article on reporting services which he has managed to recover since the disastrous crash of the SharePoint Blogs server a few month's ago and which is now here

In his case of course the Set Server Defaults section opens fine ...

Anyway, Liam's article says that this section is "just used for setting up some basic configuration" so I thought that I might not actually need to set anything here at all (and hoped that if I didn't the defaults would be active) and I went looking to see if I could find any Reporting Services web parts on the site regardless.

I couldn't so I tried this time a search of my OneNote files and found this blog item which was about Reporting Services SP2 *beta* and Web Parts.

It's a good description but things have changed since then so the command line statement is now (at least in my server where I have SQL Server on a different drive)

 stsadm.exe -o addwppack -filename "E:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Reporting Services\SharePoint\RSWebParts.cab" -url http://sharepointservername

(note as well as the C: to E: change that there's a change of folder from 80 to 90)

and the path to the location of stsadm.exe is now

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN

(12 not 60)

Once I'd made these changes that addwppack statement worked fine and when I now went to the site to see what web parts would be offered me if I did Add a WebPart on default.aspx, I now had a "Report Viewer" (the heading) web part on my page.

(The full name of the WebPart which is what you see in the list of web parts when you try to add one is "SQL Server Reporting Services Report Viewer").

So now I have that there I need to perhaps look at SQL Server Reporting Services in order to create a Report that I can then show in that WebPart ? Seems to be a plan.

Don't however wait for me to resolve this because I'm going away PC-less on holiday in a few days.

P.S. Would I have got this web part anyway even if I hadn't bothered installing the Reporting Services Add-In ? Answers please on a small piece of paper (and failing that as a comment to this blog item)

I recently amended the web parts of the WSS v3 FAQ in the default.aspx page of www.wssfaq.com. In fact I tried to reflect how many new and amended KB articles there are these days for the v3 products by making the previous one web part two - one for new KB articles and one for modified KB articles.

In order to make sure that something new to the WSS FAQ list is in the New list even if it's actually not ver 1.0, I use the difference between Created and Modified to decide whether something goes in the New web part view or in the Modified web part view. (As you know when you create an item, the same value is put in both the Created field and the Modified field, so all I need to do is make sure that Created is identical with Modified and I have a New (to this list) KB Article.)

So why are the web parts often but not always in Issue Date order in this View ?

The reason is that the intention is to show the latest KB articles that have been added to the WSS FAQ listing because these are I imagine what people checking the default page are looking for. These are usually also the latest KB Articles by Issue Date but occasionally I miss one and add it later when it pops up on yet another of my sources for these KB Articles.

In that case the Issue Date could well be a week or so earlier, yet people checking that default page will still see it as New - thanks to me listing here by Created/Modified date.

I must admit that I had today to go and look at why a KB Article with the date of the 10th of August was appearing in the middle of much later articles, so I thought it worth a small explanation here.

Now maybe I'll remember it myself !!

It's odd that even today the best article on how to install SQL Server 2005 SP2 Reporting Services is a SharePoint Team Blog from February but there (if I haven't missed something) you are.

(Aside: It's good that the SharePoint Team Blog mostly doesn't just repeat information from other team blogs about the release of beta products - see today's other blog item here)

I've been working through that article and it could do with some re-writing in my opinion - as a blog item it's fine, but if MS ever produce a white paper or TechNet article onthis subject they will need to improve the text quite a bit.

The first thing that I found confusing is the use of the "Reporting Services" term and the "Report Server" term. This has little to do with the writer of the piece however and more with the insane fact that when you in SQL Server 2005 click on "Reporting Services configuration" (Programs->SQL Server 2005->Configuration Tools->Reporting Services configuration) you get a screen headlined "Configure Report Server".

Yes, you saw that correctly you select ReportING ServICES and you get Report ServER. How mad is that!

Then of course this is all about installing the Reporting Services *Add-In* so there is an over-abundance of Reporting Services which the documentation doesn't make a really great job of distinguising among.

Anyway enough of the general mutters, what about some specifics.

There's first a list of what components need to be installed.

- SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services
- SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2
- Office SharePoint Server 2007
- Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services Add-In for Microsoft SharePoint Technologies

(Aside: why is SQL Server 2005 ... and Office SharePoint Server enough for those items but the final name - which is long enough anyway - has a Microsoft shoved in front of it?)

Anyway you see that list; think you've already installed SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services; the SP2 and MOSS 2007 and so you now install The Add-In.

WRONG.

This is just a list. Preparing the ground as it were. Don't you hate it when they do that?

Instead you have to read on and here there's a para on "Report Server Configuration". *This* is the first thing you do (*before* installing the Add-In).

This is a completely useless paragraph - except that is for the information that you need in a **screen** headed "Configure Report Server" to have a tick next to the SharePoint Integration item.

What it misses are many key points.

1. You access this page by "Reporting Services configuration" (how - see my earlier mutters above)

2. When you do there is a question mark next to SharePoint Integration.

This it says is because you haven't specified a Database for reports. You go to Database Setup and see that there is a database specified for Reports. You try just saving that. I can assure you it's not going to be enough.

Instead what you need to do is to create a NEW Database for reports or amend the existing one (which SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services installed for you which the writer of the paper knows you have done ....)

I created a new database just to be 100% sure.

3. That new database needs to have "SharePoint Integration" selected (the same page where you create it - i.e. in the Database Setup part of the Configure Report server page).

Now finally you have a tick next to SharePoint Integration and your own "Configure Report Server" page looks like the one in the Team Blog.

Only now can you install the Add-In!

(The paper doesn't bother to tell you this (the next para starts "After installing the .... Add-In ... a new application becomes available) so if you were reading through this paper before installing anything you would in fact already have installed the Add-In before doing the necessary Report Server Configuration change ...)

OK. So so far the steps are

1. Run Reporting Services configuration so that you can amend the Configure Report Server page (!)

2. Install the Add-In.

You are then supposed to see a new "Reporting Services" section in Central Authorization/Application Management.

Chances are that there's a 50% chance that you won't.

That's because again there is something missing from the instructions (if you can even call them that) in the team blog article. In this case it's the information that you need to be logged in as the user that you used to install MOSS 2007.

In my case I was logged in as the Administrator of the server which was a fine choice for doing the SQL Server (Report Server / Reporting Services) configuration changes. But try (and re-install; and do occasional iisresets etc.) as I might I never saw the Reporting Services section in Application Management after installing the Add-In.

No, instead, you need to (first as Administrator uninstall the Add-In); log-out; log back in as the user used to install MOSS 2007 and only then install the Add-In.

Now you will, finally, see the Reporting Services section in Application Management.

You'd think that would be worth mentioning wouldn't you ?

The next step is described in in the Team Blog as "you must set each of the options ... as follows"

• Manage integration settings – To configure the Report Server Web Service URL and Authentication Mode (either Windows or other trusted account).
• Grant database access – To configure the name of the report server database server instance name.
• Set server defaults – To configure report server timeouts and other options.

Based on previous experience of this Team Blog, I doubt if that's going to be that straightforward (if you look at the above text for the second two items, all it seems to say is that you need to configure somethings - not what to configure them as!), so for today (or at this this blog) I'm going to quit while I'm ahead.

P.S. I'd like at this point to express my thanks to Corleen Heiderken for posting a response to my newsgroup question asking why "Reporting Services" wasn't appearing in Application Management. I was thinking of looking there next, but it was good to get a quick confirmation in advance.

P.P.S. I couldn't, of course, leave well alone and I tried to configure all three of the items listed under Reporting Services. It *seemed* (but who really knows) that the first two went OK (at least they  didn't crash and burn) but the third one crashed and burned even before I got it opened claiming that "An unexpected error occurred while connecting to the report server. Verify that the report server is configured for SharePoint integrated mode."

There's a KB article for this message but it's only for Forms Authentication which i don't have. My weekend starts here so I'll now be wondering about it all that long weekend. I ought to have stuck to having a break after getting something working instead. (I have no idea whether this problem is caused by filling out the two earlier items incorrectly or not btw - I filled them out with things that were a) valid (produced no error message) and b) seemed reasonable. But what do I know.

As promised the first thing I did when I finally got my own copy of the Real World SharePoint 2007 book (all links via the usual book list page -http://www.asaris.de/sites/walsh/Lists/WSSv3%20FAQ/V%20Books.aspx) was to quickly read through my own chapter and look for errors that had crept in (or hadn't crept out) during the final proof-reading and editing sessions.

I found as expected a couple of Americanisms I hadn't managed to kill; a few missing commas and even (typically Finnish!) a missing "a" or two, but mainly it wasn't too bad.

There was however one biggy that was quite amusing.

On page 22 I explain that URLs have to be of certain forms and that for many forms of URL "Test this link" will work OK even when the Link actually won't work when used from a SharePoint Link List.

So http:// is fine but only if it's an absolute URL but a relative URL won't work even if "test this link" is happy with it.

I then go on to say that (I think that's is what it was!) "similarly file:/// will work in WSS 3.0 but things like ftp:// will not, even though "test this link" has no problems with them".

At least that is what I tried to say. What actually appeared was

"similarly "Error! Hyperlink reference not valid" will work in WSS 3.0 but things like ftp:// will not, even though "test this link" has no problems with them".

Maybe we'd better go back to hand-setting. I bet Gutenburg had no such problems ...

I installed the Beta for a suite of programs yesterday.

I very carefully followed the installation instructions (which were long and in a seperate PDF file) and yet only one application in that suite was installed.

I followed the instructions for removing all traces of an earlier installation and tried again - being even more careful this time. Still only one application.

So I started wondering which newsgroup I should post to - if any, as this is a beta - and decided that before I do any posting I was going to look again at the page that said "download here" to see if there was another download link.

There was only this one link specified as being for the whole suite of programs, BUT a few lines below was the text that read something like "the present beta contains only Application X. Applications Y and Z will come soon when they have reached beta status."

Motto: read everything. I thought I was being extremely thorough reading the installation documentation before I installed. (OK. I confess - after I'd installed it the first time!) but a little bit more reading before clicking the install link and I wouldn't have needed to.
