Mike Walsh's WSS and more - Wednesday, June 27, 2007

 Wednesday, June 27, 2007
I've recently had the Mac on more than one occasion recognize my Wireless router (etc.) but still claim I have no connection to the Internet.

I've been to look and the Internet connection is fine. I've also then loaded up the Acer and it's been able to access the Internet OK, so what's going on.

My theory is that a recent OS upgrade did something it shouldn't. Of course it may be that I installed this upgrade (or some other upgrade) in the wrong way because I for instance assumed that a Parallels upgrade had been done and yet all it had done was to put the file on the desktop.

Then when I started that file it didn't say it was updating but that it wanted to do a new installation (and this of a .x.x update version). All very odd and it's things like this that make me continually conscious that I'm like a child of ten with the Mac compared to with a PC.

Networking too - once it had decided I didn't have an Internet connection - wasn't the easiest thing to get working. There was nothing like repair connection which in the windows world often does the trick and the Assistant continued to insist I turn the hardware off and on which made no difference at all.

In the end I ended up (on both occasions) creating a totally new Internet connection as only that managed to create for me a working Internet connection.

The problem with that method is that I have a very long WPA PSK password that of course I can never remember. So I suppose there is nothing for it but to post it to myself because otherwise I'll be stuck if they same thing happens when I'm on the road.

Maybe it's time to look at that big OsX Tiger edition book and see what it says about Networking. Child of nine, more like.

On thing that I've learnt since buying a Mac and trying to do most of my MVP "work" on it has been that what people moving to the Mac from the PC (or even those like me who are working in parallel with both environments) need is a friend with a good level of Mac experience.

He or she would need to have infinite patience however to put up with a barrage of "how do you do this in the Mac" questions ranging from the extremely simple ("what's the Mac equiavlent of Ctrl-C") to more complicated ones (which turned out in my case to be how do you format a USB drive - or indeed anything).

If you don't have such a friend very handy, the next best step is to have a book. In my case the book I found at Amazon and which has been solving most of my Mac adjustment problems since is the O'Reilly book "Switching to the Mac: The Missing Manual, Tiger Edition http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0596006608/heme0f

I blogged briefly earlier that I was going to buy this and was a bit worried by the fact that it first came out in September 2005 which seems a lifetime away. Well that's true but it is now on it's Ninth Printing and corrections have been made on its journey there.

In fact the Ninth Printing includes a whole new appendix on running Windows on the Mac (Boot Camp or Parallels) which contains fairly basic information but at least is there (and wasn't in the Eighth Printing). So to a certain extent this is (at least) a Second Edition.

Anyway what of the book?

The good news is that it has solved many of my basic problems - most of which have to do with simple/stupid things such as the afore-mentioned Ctrl-C (which is AppleKey-C like most such Ctrl- codes) and Ctr-Alt-del which thank goodness was in the index because I needed it in order to boot a Windows machine running under Parallels. (It's *in this order* Ctrl; Alt; fn; and 'erase previous' !!).

In fact that is both the strength and weakness of the book. It's written more as a book to read through rather than as a reference manual.

I'd better explain that because it might give the wrong impression.

All parts and programs that come with Tiger are covered and points of difference to Windows equivalents clearly stated. So, yes, you can use it as a "Missing Manual" by looking up for instance the chapter on Mail. The index too while not brilliant (I couldn't find how to format a disk there!) is fairly long - however to a certain extent I thought that perhaps it was a slightly amended version of an index for Tiger for Mac users rather than a newly written index for the benefit of former Windows users (otherwise surely Formatting wouldn't be missing).

To a certain extent however needing to actually read full sections of the manual is beneficial. Certainly I found out things (and they were always compared with Windows things) there when just browsing that I didn't know and what's more that I wouldn't have learnt about if I had only grabbed the book when I had a problem.

A good example of this is the PDF reader. I naturally (?) from my PC background assumed that as I could open PDF files without the need to download Acrobat Reader from the Adobe site, that Apple had done a deal with Adobe and it was built in.

Far from it. Reading the book, I found that it was actually using an internal application called Preview to open the PDF files and that Preview was actually also (mainly) a graphics program. The book gave me the URL of where I could download Adobe Reader for the Mac if I wanted but also gave me some additional information about the functionality of Preview with PDF files that made we wonder whether I'd actually need to.

The conclusion I suppose is that I'm happy with the book and glad that I got it. Without it I'd no doubt be scrambling through the Internet looking for tips (such as I needed to do for formatting - the answer to which was "Use Disk Utility"; something that I found to make formatting a USB disk seem like a major operation). I would have probably in fact given up half way but I wanted to use this USB disk (80GB) to store some Parallels (Windows Servers running WSS and MOSS) VMs and Parallels said that USB disks when used for that needed to be Mac formatted. I took them at their word.

I discovered yesterday after writing the above that the PDF files I was seeing were actually not using Preview but were just being shown by the browser (Safari) which unlike IE doesn't require an installation of Acrobat Reader in oder to show them.

I spotted this thanks to the section in the book that told me how to Zoom In or Zoom Out in Preview (as this wasn't working!) and when trying to correct this with the equivalent of a Right-Click (Ctrl-Space in a Mac without a 2 button mouse) I discovered an "Open in Preview" option. Now Zoom In not only worked but produced extremely good quality enlarged text - very clear and sharp - which made reading the front page of an Italian newspaper (where the first page in pdf form is free on the web) extremely pleasant.

This is both funny and sad.

This blog always has one set of two Google Ads (the weekly WSS FAQ list has three sets which are there because the text is long and needs splitting up), and - just in case you didn't know this - what you see there varies to a certain extent according to where you are located.

This doesn't usually matter much because a lot of the ads are US anyway, but occasionally some of them are European and even less often (= very rarely) these ads are in Finnish.

So don't both checking the previous blog item out unless you actually live in Finland because the ad you see won't be this one.

Anyway a certain Finnish company via a third-party site is looking for people with skills in various technical areas (most of which you can only see listed if you go to the web site which I can't because it would break my agreement with Google not to click myself on ads on my site/blog).

The point is that I don't know for sure that they are looking for people with SharePoint skills or not - but why else would their advert be picked up for my blog ?

As for "both funny or sad".... Funny is because their ad appears on my blog; Sad is the fact that internal systems seem incapable of locating me as someone who knows the SharePoint products reasonably well (yet Google apparently can ...).

I found the on-line chapter of Professional SharePoint 2007 Development (WROX) to be a tough read.

I imagine it is supposed to be. After all it is one of the very few Chapter Ones that doesn't have the word "Introduction" in the Chapter Title (which is "The Microsoft Application Platform and SharePoint").

No doubt this is what most developers want. After a few pages of text there are a series of tables "XXXX Services" giving in column one Microsoft Technology and in Column two brief descriptions of the various services in the XXX section that are connected with that technology.

So for instance in the table "Security Services" and for the Microsoft Technology "Office SharePoint Server" there are two items mentioned in column 2 - Single Sign-On and Information Rights Management both with very brief descriptions.

I suppose developers love this kind of information presented in this way, but it didn't do that much for me, I'm afraid.

As for the naming. Yes, there was the by now typical naming confusion for these on-line chapter ones (so much so I'm wondering if my own chapter one messes up the naming too - time will tell).

It this case it all started well with Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 written out in full. But then we had a "SharePoint is" which you at first think might possibly mean all SharePoint products since the beginning of time but then you see "SharePoint takes advantage of the first workflow platform" and you realise that here "SharePoint" could only possibly mean the v3 SharePoint products.

Well that I can just about live with, but I can't live with a section on "Windows SharePoint Services" which only talks about what is in WSS *3.0* but apart from one mention that actually says "WSS 3.0" (some mistake, surely!) all the references in that paragraph like the heading say "WSS".

Then we have this "Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS or OSS)". Hands up those of you who have heard MOSS refered to as OSS! One person only (the writer of this probably). Let's for goodness sake stick to MOSS 2007 as the name (MOSS is just about OK just like WSS once was **when it refered to WSS 2.0 that is ** (as it was at that time the only WSS) but OSS, wasn't that a CIA predecessor? (and by CIA I don't mean the Common Interface Architecture))

Following this we have mostly "MOSS" but occasionally "OSS" too. In fact this entire chapter is a delight with MAP (anyone guess ? "Microsoft Application Platform") as well as MMC, SOA, OLAP, KPI, WF, OCS (Office Communications Server) which is "an IP BTX which means it can act as a company's VoIP phone switch or it can communicate with an existing IP PBX or TDM switch" and so on (there are more).

Yes, indeed, a book for developers. They'll no doubt love it.

Which actually brings me to a serious point. This book was written by 8 people and the MVP book was written by 16 people. In this case the writer of the on-line Chapter 1 probably wrote one more chapter; in the case of the MVP book - just like all the other MVPs - the writer of Chapter One wrote only Chapter One.

So let's say you love the style of the guy who wrote Chapter One of this book. There are something like 14 chapters he didn't write, how can you tell if you'll love the style of the guys who wrote them ? You can't.

Now in this case this is not an easy Introduction chapter so there is a fair chance that at least the difficulty level will be the same from Chapter to Chapter. But in the case of the MVP book the first (my, only) chapter is probably going to be the only one at that easy level. How do you then choose whether or not to buy the book? Is the magic word "MVP" enough? No, I really hope they use another sample chapter for the MVP book than Chapter One.

(The relevance to SharePoint is purely that I am running WSS 3.0 and MOSS etc.) in Parallels virtual machines on the Mac)

I need to convert my trial copy of Parallels to a full copy ($79.99))

So what's the logical thing to do ?

You go to the Parallels webpage (www.parallels.com) where there is a big picture of "Parallels 3.0 for the Mac" at $79.99 [noting that Parallels for Windows is $49.99 and muttering to yourself as you go] and you click on Buy Now.

You have a feeling you are not going to like this when you see that the seller they are using is in Germany and the price is marked in Euros - less in numbers than 79.99 but at today's rate of exchange more expensive in real money than $79.99. But you can change it to payment in dollars and there's the $79.99.

So far so good but you bet that unlike a US company they are going to want value -added-tax and so they do. The only relief being that they want the German rate (19%) and not the Finnish rate (22%), but that's a minute difference and you are anyway up to almost $100.

You remember that there was a coupon code on an earlier page so you hunt the internet in a different copy of the browser for a coupon for Parallels. All the links go finally to today's Parallels page and any mention of coupons say that they expired in July *2006*.

So back to the original order page (the one that is almost $100 by now) and click on Order. You get an error page - surely not because pop-ups are blocked? How crazy can a seller be? So now you don't of course know whether your order has gone through or not and you'll need to carefully check both e-mail and credit account statements for days to come.

Meanwhile you go back to the Parallels main page and instead of Buy Now under the picture of Parallels 3.0 for Mac you now select instead the Buy Now item on the menu line.

Bingo! This goes to a US seller and all they seem to want is the $79.99 (which suddenly seems remarkably cheap :) ) even after you specify Finland.

[Note this is a download so there are no extra costs for supplying to me and while I don't mind (much!) paying money to software developers, I DO mind paying unnecessary taxes.]

Unfortunately I can't order it there and then because I still don't know whether that order via the german company has gone through or not. Probably not because these guys always send e-mail but you never know and one thing I certainly DON'T need is two copies.

What's the betting that by the time I come to order (i.e. on the last day of my 15-day free trial) even that link will be pointing at that ***** German re-seller as well. I'll let you all know in a P.S. - for now I have a print-out with the direct URL to that US seller (which also came up while I was investigating the coupon possibility so I could try retracing those steps too).

P.S. This is not funny. I managed with a bit of effort to once again get the US seller, rather than that German one, and despite me specifying an address in Finland (I need to use my own address to claim this back off tax!) it still only specified 79.95 dollars while asking for my credit card info. I then pressed order thinking that was that. Parallels for 79.95.

Guess again, Mike. *Then* they gave me yet another page to say Order and now they'd sneaked in (there's no other word for it) a tax charge. Only this time it wasn't the German tax rate of 19%, it was the Finnish tax rate of 22% which made it even closer to 100 dollars in total.

Tough luck, guys. You're definately not getting my business. Is there no other place where they won't demand Finnish / German / Mongolian taxes ? Yes, Amazon US. But they won't send software to Finland. Grrrr.
