Mike Walsh's WSS and more - Friday, May 04, 2007

 Friday, May 04, 2007

I added 9 WSS 3.0 KB Articles just now to the WSS FAQ sites. All were dated the 30th of April and all were new (that is version 1.0)

There's nothing special about that except that usually I manage to add the articles rather more quickly after they come out.

What however was special was that I didn't find out about these articles via my RSS feeds (to be exact Microsoft's RSS feeds and for double "security" the KBAlertz RSS feeds). Despite all of these articles being correctly specified in the Applies To section as being for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, none of them have yet appeared in my Microsoft RSS feed and only one of them has so far appeared in the KBAlertz feed that usually just serves as a confirmation for me of what I have already read in the Microsoft feed.

I really do hope these Microsoft feeds (there's MOSS 2007 as well) are still using the same URLs because by coincidence early today I proof-read my chapter of the upcoming Wrox book written by MVPs and there I give a lot of useful RSS feeds including this one.

If anyone in Microsoft is reading this, could you comment on what's happening here? This is worrying. My other sources often only give the new KB articles a week or more after the date of issue -and that's too late !

Anyone checking the KB Articles section of the WSS FAQ sites will notice a lot of KB Articles in the "Outlook 2007" category all of which are dated 25.4.2007.

Most of these are 1.x versions of articles that were there before (usually from Oct/Nov 2006) but some are either new items or items that are new to the list as I missed them first time around.

It's been easy to miss them first time around because the Applies To section consistently for these articles says only "Outlook 2007" and makes no mention of any SharePoint product despite SharePoint (or WSS) being mentioned in the title.

Another problem with them is that the Outlook people seem to think there is only one version of Windows SharePoint Services out there (and sometimes that there is only one thing called "SharePoint"). Usually (because they also mention SPS 2003 in the same breath) it is possible to guess that they mean WSS 2.0, but sometimes even such a guess isn't possible (and don't get me started on the pointlessness of an article that says it affects "SharePoint Lists" - which product/version please!).

Anyway I've used MVP channels to put through requests for a mention of the WSS version number(s) and/or whether all or only some of the SharePoint products are affected. Plus, naturally, a request that something other than Outlook 2007 needs to be in the Applies To section.

We'll see what comes of those requests, but if there is a sudden flury of revised SharePoint/Outlook 2007 KB Articles in a couple of months time, you could always just for a laugh look to see if there are 2.0s in sight and whether the Applies To sections still only contains one product.

Jeff Webb has been active recently (both giving and taking) in the SharePoint newsgroups (using his usual alias) and I must admit I wondered.

It turns out that he is taking time out from writing non-SharePoint books to write what O'Reilly describe as the 2nd Edition of Essential SharePoint.

In fact it's the first edition of Essential SharePoint 2007 and is due out in September 2007. The 2003 edition (WSS only) was one of my favourites so I'm hoping for some good clear text from him again with this one.

In the meantime Addison-Wesley had grabbed the "Essential SharePoint" label for one of their books ("Essential SharePoint 2007: Delivering High-Impact Collaboration" (Addison-Wesley - Scott Jamison, Mauro Cardarelli)). Did they think O'Reilly wouldn't notice or is nothing sacred in the Publishing business?

I also found a couple of books from Wrox about Excel Services.

For me that's SharePoint because after all you need MOSS 2007 Enterprise to get it. Oddly an Amazon search for SharePoint threw up only the baby version "Beginning Excel Services" (Wrox - Liviu Asnash, Eran Megiddo, Craig Thomas) which is actually already out [US: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/04701048997/heme0f, UK: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0470104899/heme] and didn't throw up the grown-up version "Professional Excel Services" (Wrox - Shahar Prish) which this morning wasn't marked as being released but now is [US: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0470104864/heme0f; UK: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0470104864/heme]. The reason of course was that the blurb on the Amazon US page for Professional Excel Services didn't mention SharePoint at all.

Mind it, that ("Professional") book is written by a Microsoft guy. He probably has no conception of needing to pay for software licences (i.e. MOSS 2007 Enterprise in this case) to be able to use an application.

So there you are - even more books for you to rush out and buy. I only hope that you are using the Walsh method. This - in case you are unaware of the concept - is that you buy a book; put it on your shelf; and within months of it being there (unopened apart from the Intro pages) you become (by magic) an "expert". If you don't follow this method, I suggest you don't buy any more SharePoint (including those Excel Services!) books at the moment because summer only comes once a year.

[Meanwhile you Southern hemisphere people can buy double quantities. You have nothing else to do now the Cricket World Cup is over. (Yes I know it was in the West Indies. I even know who won, but don't they always)]

I'd already investigated which MS wireless keyboard had a Vista driver (the keyboard I use on the desktop is the non-wireless one including the fingerprint reader and getting that to work with the portable meant I have a permanent popup-box on boot (with or without using that keyboard) about the fingerprint software not working. (I know, I know - as will those of you who remember the trials and tribulations involved in getting that keyboard to work with 64-bit Vista ). I found quite a lot that worked with Vista but only one (or was it just only one keyboard that didn't cost a fortune?) that also had a 64-bit Vista driver. (In typical (?) style the box might well say "Vista approved" but it won't necessarily mean - and mostly doesn't - that it'll work with 64-bit Vista).

In fact at my price level (which turned out to be 40 Euros). There was one - the wireless desktop 2000.

Even though the fact that using the portable's own keyboard was driving me mad because of an over-sensitive mouse pad which meant that I was continuously losing text, I still had no particular intention to actually go and buy one, and it needed a rather odd series of events for me to do so.

First I popped into a department store's basement food store to buy some bread that only they have and had to go past the CD/DVD+ section on the way out. Usually I don't bother looking because they never have anything at the sort of prices I pay for CDs and DVDs these days, but they had a strangely cheap Olympus digital camera (4Mpixels; 2.8 optical zoon) at 59 Euros which dragged me in and then I saw a bunch of mostly rubbishy CDs selling at the even cheaper (so cheap I've never seen it anywhere else, ever) price of 2 for 1 Euro. Now among those were some rather nice Classical CDs from the Finnish Ondine company which classical buffs will know doesn't make rubbish at all. So I bought all they had (11) including some duplicates (good presents!) and one of the better of the rubbishy ones to make up the even dozen at a grand total of 6 Euros and wandered off home.

Next day I was back as additional 2 for 1 Euro stock was promised and as in fact it wasn't yet there, I bought the Olympus digital camera (well, actually not, I'd checked it out on the web the night before and found out it wasn't rubbish and decided to get it for taking to places (and leaving in places) where it wouldn't be a disaster to lose or ruin it).

So now I had a camera that only had it's own memory to store pictures in and I needed to buy an xd card and I found a 1GB SanDisk fast card (H) for 24,90 or 2 Euros more than the normal card (M) and about 8 Euros less than the equivalent Olympus brand M card. This I found at the "networkshop" store which is about a 10 mins drive away. So I ordered it via the web; got a pickup number and now had to decide when to go and get it.

I was up early enough on Saturday morning to drive there, but if I was going to make a special journey there (and back) just for that very very small card, was there anything else in the computer way I needed?

So *that's* why I've spent a good bit of the afternoon getting that wireless keyboard and mouse (and the svideo connection to the TV ...) to work and why I've been able to write this entire piece without losing any text at all. (Later: Spelling mistakes - now corrected - were however still not a problem!)

P.S. Both the keyboard and mouse are working well although even when using the new batteries supplied there is the occasional moan that the battery strength in the mouse isn't enough. This is solved by moving the transmitter *much* nearer the mouse - i.e. that cable stretches out almost as far as the wireless keyboard and mouse, making the whole thing somewhat less than wireless in my opinion.
However it did take a while to get both to work correctly. The initial recognition of the keyboard/mouse combination installed goodness only knows which drivers. My guess is that they were the 32-bit drivers, because the whole thing (the keyboard being the problem) only started working after I went to www.microsoft.com; searched on "drivers wireless keyboard Vista" and found (not as first hit but close enough) a suitable www.microsoft.com/hardware/drivers/... page that contained a link to all drivers. This then gave two 64-bit Vista drivers (one for the mouse; one for the keybaord) that then worked fine. So in the end getting a Microsoft keyboard - where I knew they had Vista 64-bit drivers - paid off compared to buying the Logitech ones I passed in the shop on the way to the Microsoft ones.

Workflow is such an essential part of the SharePoint v3 products (in fact only yesterday I advised someone to consider that different (invoicing) procedures for different types of documents would *because of different workflows* probably mean that those different types of documents would be happier in different Document libraries) that when I made the decision to include a newly released Windows Workflow Foundation (WWF) book in the WSS FAQ sites, I wasn't sure where to put it.

As it was I'd already made the decision when adding the David Mann (Workflow in the 2007 Microsoft Office System) book to the SharePoint v3 Books list rather than to the "Non-SP Books" list, so this new one went to SharePoint v3 Books too.

The newly released book btw is "Microsoft Windows Workflow Foundation Step by Step" by K. / Kenn / Kennard Scribner (depending on which Amazon site you look at!).

The Amazon US link is here
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/073562335X/heme0f

If you are in Europe considering ordering from the Amazon France site (http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/073562335X/wssfaq0fe-21) which has at the moment a price which is even almost competitive (for Europeans) with the US price. So if you are in a hurry that might be the cheapest way.

But if you do watch out for postage etc. costs. Only yesterday a friend here told me that the price increase for four books he was going to buy from there had so much added on that he went instead to the Fnac site.

P.S. I decided to see what other WWF books are just out and found a few more of which this one seems perhaps the best for SP people. "Professional Windows Workflow Foundation (Wrox - Todd Kitta)" at

Regular visitors to the www.wssfaq.com site may notice today that there is an extra icon at the top of the Home Page called "2006 - Office Documents".

This leads to the first cut of my (long put-off) attempt to remove 2006 links that refer to the Office 2007 client products from the "Articles - 2007 Products" list which is getting rather full.

When I started this List in mid 2006 there wasn't that much SharePoint stuff and so as I was also following the Office 2007 clients products' beta stuff, I decided there were probably more people like me around and I added links to new stuff on them to the "Articles - 2007 Products" list as well.

Now of course most of that information is still potentially valuable but not particularly valuable for people concentrating on Sharepoint problems (of which there are enough!) so rather than just mass delete them from the "Articles - 2007 Products" list I've created a new list "2006 - Office Documents" and copied them there.

I've only started with this process (and started with the clearcut "Office 2007 Systems" sub-category) and also only started doing this for the www.wssfaq.com site and not the wss.collutions.com site.

So expect to see the amount of links in "2006 - Office Documents" increase slowly over the next few days with a corresponding (and welcome) decline in the "Articles - 2007 Products" list.

There*are* some links to Office 2007 *client* software from the 2007 period that are still being added to the "Articles - 2007 Products" list, but, as followers of the weekly "WSS FAQ additions and corrections" posting will know, these are these days only a severely restricted (and hopefully the most relevant to SharePoint users) number of the total amount of stuff out there.

P.S. I've also removed some of the Beta links. I have tried not to remove links which have relevance today (such as where to get the Beta products - as these might be needed as part of someone's upgrade process).

First why I have on and off thought that the Wrox book "Beginning SharePoint 2007 Administration: Windows SharePoint Services 3 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007" by Göran Husman was out; then thought it wasn't; then thought it was (loop).

It's because the cover of that 2007 book (being Wrox it's a Photograph of the writer(s) at the top) looks identical to that of his very similarly named book (for SP 2003) that came out in late 2006. So I saw that listed; thought "oh, it's out already" and changed the web site only to later see that it wasn't out (loop).

Now I've worked out why this loop happened, hopefully there won't be another change to that item until it really IS out !

Meanwhile two books really are (double-checked I promise) just out.

The MSPress book "Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Version 3.0 Step by Step" by Olga Londer, Todd Bleeker, Penny Coventry, Bill English

from Amazon US via http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0735623635/heme0f

(see the full item 9 at the full book list http://www.asaris.de/sites/walsh/Lists/WSSv3%20FAQ/V%20Books.aspx for Amazon France; Germany and UK links)

and there's also the SAMS book "Microsoft SharePoint 2007 Unleashed" by Michael Noel, Colin Spence

Amazon US: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0672329476/heme0f

(item 16 on the full list)

Note that this is the revised name Microsoft SharePoint 2007 Administrator's Unleashed book - the equivalent Developers book is not yet out (but is expected in May)
