I decided it was time I did an update of the prices for Amazon France; Germany; UK and US that I list for the v3 SharePoint books (released or not) at http://www.asaris.de/sites/walsh/Lists/WSSv3%20FAQ/V%20Books.aspx

So far I've done the first 20 (actually 19 as I discover item 17 is missing :))

What I was expecting was to see more prices listed as the release date got closer but in fact Amazon France now has 7 books of those 19 with no prices only two of which didn't have a price before (and one with a price that didn't have one before). Amazon Germany has meantime reduced some of its prices considerably (leaving only a few that are crazily high compared to the other Amazon sites).

But the surprising news to me at least is that another three of those 19 books are now released - one of which is very odd because although the US site says it's now available; it's lost its prices for all of the other sites and indeed the UK site no longer lists it. Very odd - especially perhaps as its the only SharePoint Designer 2007 book to have beenn released so far (if it indeed really has been released).

Here are the three newly released books (there may of course be more in the second half of the list but I doubt it so I'm getting this out now) with the links to the Amazon US site. (Other links as always are in the item itself in the above web page).

Sharepoint Designer All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies (For Dummies - John Paul Mueller) *released*  (but only in US)
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0470036508/heme0f

Microsoft SharePoint 2007: Building Office 2007 Solutions in VB 2005 (apress - Scot Hillier) *released*  (note this is the VB2005 version - the C# version was already out) http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/159059813X/heme0f

Microsoft SharePoint 2007 For Dummies (For Dummies - Vanessa Williams) *released* http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0470099410/heme0f

Later: There's also a fourth from Swedish SharePoint MVP Göran Husman: **No there isn't - the 2003 book by him (came out late 2006!) and the 2007 book by him (NOT OUT) have the same cover hence the total confusion !**

what IS out (now - writing on 22nd April) is the SharePoint 2007 Unleashed book which used to be called SharePoint 2007 Administration Unleashed.

That is here: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0672329476/heme0f (Microsoft SharePoint 2007 Unleashed (Sams - Michael Noel, Colin Spence) *released*)

P.S. I've now added two (now three more icons to the right-hand column of the booklist page (Released books). I haven't added the SPD 2007 one because I find it very suspicious that it on release still doesn't have an icon and that the description continues to talk about "FrontPage". Very odd. I'll mark the book in the list as "*released?*" I think.

My wife's machine has been slow for a while. Last week - even after I'd uninstalled a mass of stuff - it was even slower than usual because a file used by Norman Virus Control (yes, "Norman" not "Norton" - it came free (3-yr sub) with the machine) was out of control and taking 98% of CPU.

So I finally removed Norman. Installed NOD32 (for which i had a five-machine licence and only had on my portable - see an early blog piece); and still she reckoned it was slow.

Now when wondering what that file was that was causing all the problem (tfl.exe?) I'd seen a register amender, so I was receptible to a tip on which was a good register amender utility.

That came when I was reading an article by Jon Honeybull in the March 2007 issue of the UK Magazine PcPro - which I read a month late on their web site www.pcpro.co.uk (real World Computing section). In it he noted how he had run Registry Mechanic to clear up problems with one machine.

That was recommendation enough for me, so i found it at www.pctools.com; thought that at $29.95 it was a reasonable price to pay; tried out the free version (which of course spotted a lot of errors but only cleared some of them); and then proceded to order it.

This started a long series of blunders.

First I spotted that they had a three machine license for $9.95 extra, so I clicked on that. If you are counting we are now up to $39.90.

Then I was dismayed to find that they were charging me tax at 21% so now we were up to $48 and change.

Now one of the benefits of ordering software via the Internet from US companies is that you don't have to pay tax on them, so why this one? A quick look at the web site's help "why are we charging tax". The answer was roughly "our sales are now done via our Irish office and for European addresses we are forced to charge tax". No explanation of course of why the h*** they are doing their sales via their Irish office.

Anyway I was a bit shocked by all this so looking at the $48 charge I now had, I thought I'd check if their price in Euros was any better (maybe without tax?:)); specified Euro to see how many of them they wanted and instead of a new number I got an error message about my credit card. So I went back in the browser to the web page giving that $48 and pressed OK.

Next thing I knew was that I had received and printed out an invoice for **EUR** 48 (and change) not dollars. At an exchange rate of 1.32 today that put the total cost up to over $64 !

(Needless to say I've protested at being given a bill for Euros instead of the dollars I said OK too and have also threatened to get my credit card company to do something about this)

Then finally I saw the small print (which had obviously passed me by when ordering this thing but I hadn't noticed). What I have ordered and paid a crazily high amount of money for is **A year's subscription** to this utility. S***. I never buy subscriptions for software and especially never buy subscriptions that renew themselves automatically (thus knocking my credit card over and over again).

I'd seen a reference to one year's support, but that's OK. I'd also seen a reference to "free updates over the lifetime of the product" but no reference to any statement that it would stop working after a year.

So there you have it. Registry Mechanic does seem to work well (her machine starts up much quicker at least) but boy, don't they gouge their customers.

(I'm not going to go as far as "lie and cheat" because no doubt somewhere hidden away in that order process (where you enter all your address and credit card details before they tell you about that 21% tax) I was told I was paying for a subscription and because I still haven't heard whether the company that does the invoicing is going to change my credit card amount from Euros to the same *number* of Dollars, but it certainly rankles that what started out as a cheap 30 dollar utility (for permanent use) ended up (for the moment?) costing me over 64 dollars (for a year's use only).)

P.S. On the first pass the money processing company (in Germany) is saying that that is the price in Euros and that is what they have charged (and that I should contact the makers if I don't like their prices). I'm saying it's not acceptable because I agreed to pay the same *number* but in USD and not in Euros and that *they* not the software company are the ones making the incorrect credit card deduction. This message has also gone (as cc:) to PCTools support.

P.P.S. On the second pass the money processing company has now agreed to pass my (let's say) comments to "the seller" (PC Tools) who have two days to reply. If they do they (the money processing company will give me an equivalent credit and will either do the necessary with the new price or let me just re-order through the system (which hopefully that time will actually charge in USD!). Seems fair enough. The ball is now in PCTools court.

P.P.P.S. The Germany-based processing company has now sent me a message (from an address I can't reply to, so I couldn't thank them for their trouble) that the order has been cancelled. While hunting for further information on their prices I found one that offered a 10% discount on the price so I might try them this time. Because of the subscription nature though, before I sign up for *one* copy there, I'll first try to find an alternative product - one that let's you buy it and use it for ever. I really do hate the idea of my credit card being charged automatically each year and I hate the idea that I have just rented software. It's not as if the product's price is low for a shareware product (especially when you add on that 21% tax).

At work everyone on this floor uses the same network printer. It's a rather nice colour job which seems occasionally to serve as a way to get pictures of people's dogs, but that's another issue.

I had to print out an electronic ticket for a flight and so, as I'm close enough to the printer to hear when it stops printing, I waited quite a long time for it to stop printing completely (it has the habit of printing in fits and starts so you have to wait for a while after it stops) before sending off my single page print job.

There was no noise of the printer starting up so I went to have a look. Someone had printed masses of copies (one screen per page of course - it's not her money) of a rather boring looking presentation given by an outside salesperson and of course the paper had run out.

So I added paper and waited for the next lull.

The same job had run out of paper again. So I again re-filled and this time after a while (and a couple of smaller jobs that had also been waiting) my page finally came through and my e-mail flight ticket (a true business application :) ) was safely in my hands.

Now it's several hours later and that entire stack of what must be something like 30 copies of that presentation are still waiting to be collected.

So what's the temptation ?

The temptation is to remove just one copy. The person will not notice any difference (this is a LARGE pile) and presumably has counted how many copies she needs before printing them [sorry, but for some reason I think this is a she - it's not rational at all, I know] and will far too late discover that she's one out.

On the other hand, how about just removing a couple of pages at random from within that pile? That will screw up two copies ...  (and as these copies are already collated *that* will never be spotted).

Sighs. Why do I not fall for temptation today....

There was a question in a SharePoint public newsgroup about whether the ability to have a second language was possible in WSS 3.0 as well as in MOSS 2007.

It may be that the question was actually more tightly phrased than that but I assumed the questioner was talking about Language Packs and said that WSS 3.0 had in fact Language Packs available earlier than MOSS 2007, so, yes, you could also use Language Packs with WSS 3.0.

Then came a clarification. The questioner wanted to click on a button and get a translation of a page. I said that as far as I knew this was MOSS only and moved on.

Later - having seen in the MOSS 2007 Administrator's Companion (http://www.amazon.com/dp/0735622825?tag=heme0f&camp=14573&creative=327641&linkCode=as1&creativeASIN=0735622825&adid=0FCTBJVPYG472S4XBSWP&) that this is a new Variations function, I checked the standard comparison document http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/d/c/1dc632e8-71e1-466f-8a2f-c940f1438e0a/SharePointProductsComparison.xls to see what it said.

I'd always wondered why this document seemed very short. It seems I was sleeping every time I looked at it because it was one of those documents that are set up with page tabs (!). So having seen in the Admin Companion that this is something that has moved with CMS 2002 to MOSS 2007, I naturally looked at the "Content Management" page and found there NO mention of Variations but instead the information that the "Translation Library site template" was a function of MOSS 2007 only.

Oddly enough it's a function of both the Standard and Enterprise versions. (This is odd when you consider that usually the Enterprise version is considered the upgrade from CMS 2002.)

All of this leaves me wondering if there are two different things - Variations and the Translation Library site template - both of which could be used to satisfy that users question.

It also leaves the question open as to which SP 2007 application includes the Variations functionality.

P.S. Once again my "speed" reading has failed to pay off. I saw the heading "Site variations" earlier but the description of that starts with "sites .... in a parent/child type of relationship" so I stopped reading. If I'd carried on I'd have seen "allow organisations to deploy multi-language publishing sites ...".

[And yes, as expected this too is MOSS 2007 only (and equally surprisingly it's for both the Standard and the Enterprise versions).]

P.P.S. Now all we need is for someone to write a blog on when you use one (Translation Library Site Template) and when do you use the other (Site variations). Any offers?

Yesterday we took a trip to the Technical museum on the other side of Helsinki in order to give away my Osborne I (identical - beige case and all - to the first model sold in the US apart from the German keyboard. It cost me in 1982 what my Acer Ferrari cost me in late 2005 with inflation not included in the calculation) to the Technical museum along with my ancient hand card-punch and a couple of equally old (and looking hand-made) memory (?) cards my wife had saved from her early mainframe days.

When we subsequently looked at the computer section it wasn't hard to see why they had been keen to get all the above but especially the Osborne. They had no luggables or portables at all and the PCs they had were mainly the first four models of the "MikroMikko" (Mikko is a Finnish name - equivalent of Michael) series made in Finland by what was then NokiaData (later sold to ICL-Fujitsu; then the PC part was merged with Siemens (Fujitsu-Siemens) followed inevitably by the closing of the Finnish factory; the transfer of all work to Germany and the demise of the MikroMikko name).

No IBMs in sight except for a picture of an IBM PC on the large illustrated time-line.

Oddly enough the section on the development of telephones and especially mobile telephones was larger and better equipped. I wonder why :)

I was surprised when - after my previous success with it - the installation routine didn't find a driver for my Microsoft keyboard with fingerprint reader when I attached it to the USB port.

But no problem, I'll just go to www.microsoft.com and search on "keyboard drivers Vista".

That looked promising at first - after selecting keyboards I got a drop-down and there it was "Microsoft keyboard with fingerprint reader." So I selected it and was asked for my Operating system.

XPPro was listed which was a bit odd given the search I'd made, but Vista was listed too. So no worries, then ?

Well actually, yes, all they provide for their own (expensive - less than 2 years ago) keyboard was a 32-bit Vista driver.

Thanks a lot, guys. Wonderful support.

(and I hope you can really hear the sarcasm oozing out in that comment - I may be a Microsoft MVP but I'm an MVP with a portable keyboard that is driving me mad because my text keeps jumping lines because my hand goes over the over-sensitive mouse pad at times [and I can't turn that down because - sing it all with me - there isn't a Vista 64-bit driver for it] and now the lack of a 64-bit Vista driver for Microsoft's own product means I can't even attach another keyboard. I'd go out and buy another (cheaper) one, but first I'll have to see if there's a 64-bit driver for that too (and I bet there isn't!).)

P.S. There's a solution for this but it's not that obvious.

First you download the 64-bit driver for any (probably any, I chose the Digital Media Pro) keyboard that has a 64-bit Vista driver. Then you install it.

Now here's the joke. Halfway through the install there's a list of "which keyboard do you have?" and guess what, on the list is my "Keyboard with Fingerprint Reader" !

Microsoft's mistake is that they could have listed a 64-bit Vista driver in that original list BUT said "keyboard only". They could also find the keyboard only driver too (but they don't). So there is a driver; it does work; but Microsoft's web sites (and hunting for driver routines) aren't up to the task of finding a keyboard driver only (for a keyboard) but insist on saying there isn't one if the keyboard also has a fingerprint reader (for which there truly isn't one [by which I mean there isn't suitable *software* for 64-bit Vista]).

The point is I *never* use the fingerprint reader so I couldn't care less. I DO care about getting the keyboard to work though and I wish Microsoft put their priorities on that aspect of the keyboard rather than concentrating on the fingerprint software. [It's like saying to a small boy "here's a football, but we'll only let you kick it if you wear the full Manchester United strip and we're sold out of them".] I.e. get the essentials (working kyboard) right rather than bothering over much with the fancy bits.
