But first. Why wasn't it possible for me to open Documents and Settings in the Vista boot drive and work my way down to Favorites so that I could copy my Favorites across from the XPPro side. Instead I had to start fiddling about with the menu item Add Favorites and really p*** about to get these across.

I forgot also to say yesterday that I didn't have at first music but that Vista managed to find a driver and that took care of that.

What however I didn't have was the latest graphics driver for my Mobilty Radeon X700 that I later discovered maybe only has 128MB memory itself but it's also stealing over 0.5GB of mine (without bothering to tell me). Vista claimed it's own ("Microsoft") driver was the latest and greatest but a trip to amd.ati.com (I'd forgotten they'd bought ATI) gave a new driver from the end of February so that is now installed. Hopefully that will clear up yesterday's problem of the machine going to sleep OK but refusing to wake up (which forced me to do something I always hate which is to take out the mains cable and then the battery). I've in any case now changed the power settings and closing the lid should now be the only thing that puts the portable into hibernation (default was sleep for some odd reason).

Kudos by the way at this point to the "Vista - in a Nutshell" book from O'Reilly that listed hibernation in the index and also warned about needing to upgrade the graphics card and/or amend the power settings if the machine wasn't waking up as it should. That was a perfect book for me. I'll leave the Missing manuals and Missing Manuals Starter Edition for people who haven't seen quite so many Operating Systems come and go. I'll also leave their Definitive Edition well alone too because that was written by Mr William Stanek who continues in his blurb to be proud that he helped to bomb Iraq in the first Gulf War. Given the fact that this book is not just meant for the US market, someone ought to have a quiet word with Mr Stanek. (Oddly enough I blogged and complained about this the last time I mistakenly went so far as to buy a book by him something like two years ago. Nothing changes (and I had more readers then!)).

As for Finnish (grrrr). Zinio gave me no choice and installed the Finnish language version of its reader. OK I understand it but that's not the point. Give me the choice !

Similarly I'm re-installing the latest version of the Nero I have on the other side (from where I will remove it if the Vista version works) and the installation routine is telling me in Finnish what to do. Hopefully there at least they aren't installing a Finnish version of the software as then I will really scream (and do it all over again after setting my locale temporarily to English).

That's it other than to say that Thunderbird just lies there for hours trying to send a single message. Not a great implementation, that.

My (Acer Ferrari) portable has 100 GB divided into 2 drives of roughly 40GB and 60GB.  There was no particularly good reason to upgrade it from XPPro but I'd been offered (legally) a good price for buying a copy of Vista Ultimate (a far cry from the 345 Euros [ca $440] they want here in Finland) so I now had a copy of that raring to go.

Actually I had two copies of which I was only allowed to install one as the total amount of "goods" that people get for the $440 are a box; 2 DVDs (32- and 64-bit versions) a card and a very (very) small booklet. Oh yes and a serial number.

Now the plan was to install that on the desktop and leave my working portable well alone, but that idea was squashed by my wife who happens to be the main user of that desktop and who for some reason didn't want to risk (again!!) her applications not working, so the portable it was.

So I took image backups of C: and D:; removed most of the files from D: (easier to do than for C:) to give space for the upgrade; and proceded to upgrade from XPPro to Vista Ultimate.

Or rather I didn't. After several failed attempts to start from within XPPro and after changing the BIOS so that it would boot from the DVD drive, I realised that the problem was not with my system, it was with the 32-bit Vista DVD. Yes for $440 they supply you with a bum disk as well. So this forced me into what in retrospect was probably the right decision, namely to install the 64-bit version.

So I booted from the DVD drive only this time with the 64-bit disk there and everything went smoothly only of course because I was now installing the 64-bit version I could no longer upgrade so (as I had good backups after all) I just did a new installation on D:.

Here's where the  "by surprise" in the title comes in. Once the installation was complete I actually had two choices on re-boot. I could either start "earlier version of Windows" in which case XPPro loads from C: (with the D: drive where the Vista stuff is) or I can start Vista in which case that loads from C: (with the XPPro stuff in D:). To put it another way I've lost nothing (except all the stuff I deleted from D: most of which were VMs that I can use from an external USB drive in any case) and yet I've gained Vista.

So at the moment I'm wondering just what if anything I'll need to boot XPPro for. So far I'm stuck at Outlook Express which i use for newsgroup handling. In Vista it seems I'd be forced to use Thunderbird which I don't find as easy to use when monitoring rather than just reading newsgroups.

As for Vista itself. So far so good. The only major screaming moment came when all the English language links started leading to Finnish language sites because my locale was set to Finland (for keyboard and character set) and after a while (when I stopped shouting at the machine that if I wanted bloody Finnish I wouldn't be using an English language Operating system would I) I cooled down and just changed the IE settings so that it would give me English UK; English US; German; and Swedish pages before daring to inflict Finnish pages on me again and that problem was gone as quickly as it came.

Connection to the internet was just a matter of finding my code to connect to my Wifi Router. I discovered as always that there are free 90 day trial versions of at least one piece of virus checking software - in this case there were two Norton (which worked) and Microsoft's Live (which didn't install) and two other virus checker companies who seemed to be offering only chargeable versions. Then there was the inevitable download of Adobe Reader (which oddly wouldn't install when the Norton was installing but did later - ver 8.0 for Vista by the way) and finally the full Office suite which means that at there moment there are two copies of that on that portable (one on each side) so the XPPro copy is going to get removed asap.

... and that's enough for today ... (except perhaps for the strange note that Vista's IE7 wouldn't let me download the Firefox installation exe (and note that I had had no problems earlier with the Adobe download))

A while back it was impossible to even ask this question because there were no SharePoint v3 books out and then for almost a month there was only one. But now there's a choice so it's decision time.

(All the books are listed here http://www.asaris.de/sites/walsh/Lists/WSSv3%20FAQ/V%20Books.aspx and all the one's mentioned before have icons on the right-hand-side of that page [leading to Amazon US - the items in the center also have links to Amazon UK, Amazon Germany and Amazon France]

To my mind there's only one book on anybody's must list and that is the Administrator's Companion. I was always referring to the equivalent v2 book - for instance even though I'd done tens of installations of WSS 2.0 and SPS 2003 I still referred to that book and the Microsoft installation documentation every time I did a production installation (and the book was where I kept my scribbled notes on those installations).

The rest of the books that are out make for a more interesting discussion. Both the Todd Bleeker and the Scot Hillier book are for developers and yet at the same time they contain enough useful information to be of great value for Admins who have no intention of doing any developing.

Todd's book "Developer's Guide to the Windows SharePoint Services v3 Platform" contains a marvellous set of chapters about what is new in SharePoint v3 that will be useful to anyone coming to the v3 products from the v2 SharePoint products without being heavily involved in the v3 betas (and probably to those that were as well).

Scot's book "Microsoft SharePoint 2007: Building Office 2007 Solutions with C#" has apparently (the word from a source I trust on this) the best chapter on how to set up a development (virtual machine) environment that's out there. This doesn't surprise me. I found the first chapter in Scot's second v2 book (SPS 2003 and WSS Books - Advanced SharePoint Services Solutions) to be so useful that I used to say (and think) that it was worth the cost of the whole book by itself. I suspect the same is the same with this chapter in this v3 book (although personally I'm waiting for the equivalent VB book to come out before buying it).

The final pure SharePoint book that's out is the User's Guide "SharePoint 2007 User's Guide: Learning Microsoft’s Collaboration and Productivity Platform"). This one I've not seen so take the following comments with a pinch of salt. If you want a User's Guide at the moment (i.e. presumably a general SharePoint v3 book that doesn't go into the details of the Administrator's Companion) by all means consider it as it's for now the only one out there than covers this area. I remember not being over-impressed by the equivalent v2 book (capable rather than full of new knowledge) but that might have been because it came out relatively late and I by that time already knew quite a lot about the v2 product(s). As I say, treat my comment above about this book with a piece of salt.

As for the final book on that list of icons, that's a book about workflow. Workflow is a key area in the v3 SharePoint products and no doubt if you have the time to study this book and if workflow projects are your main area of SharePoint activity then this book (Workflow in the 2007 Microsoft Office System) is certainly one you should seriously consider. [Note added-in: However you should have a look at the the book first if possible. The writing style didn't appeal at all to the second person who commented this blog item - however it did appeal to someone else who commented!.]

I'll ignore here the final two icons which are for a couple of DVD courses (cost $299 and $399 respectively). I suspect that none of you blog readers are going to fork out that amount of your own money. Also all I can say about them is that the same "writer" did the same two courses in the v2 timeframe as well, so presumably they sold well enough (and therefore were good enough) to make this second v3 series possible.

So there you have it. The answer to which book to buy seems to be "all of them". As always it depends who and what you are buying them for.

Every Admin: Administrator's Companion

Starting with SharePoint: User's Guide

Development: the Todd Bleeker and Scot Hillier books

What's in v3 if you know v2: the Todd Bleeker book

Workflow: the workflow book (!) [but note the question mark in the text above]

P.S. In the v2 timeframe the general book I liked the best was the O'Reilly one from Jeff Webb. He's not writing the v3 O'Reilly one so the jury has to be out on that. (It, like all the rest, isn't out yet). Otherwise the Unleashed book (also coming for v3) and the Digital Press book from Kevin Laahs and a couple of others was also well up there (and his/their v3 one is coming but only in the late summer). You need usually to be careful with the Microsoft Press general books because they tend to be somewhat middle-of-the-road in my opinion. The For Dummies books (of which there seem to be quite a few coming) have their own readers of course and I have found the one of the series (Firewalls) that I own to be very useful to me, so don't think I'm knocking them. I suspect however most readers of this blog will be looking elsewhere when they order.

Quest Software kindly sent me a couple of T-shirts a while ago so I started off as being positive about them but then I tried to find out about their SharePoint products via their web site.

It's crazy enough to want me to give them an E-mail address and my name and location before they are prepared to let me look at a technical specifications paper. (Which seemed to be the only place where they would commit to their product "Quest Site Administrator for SharePoint" working with the 2007 SharePoint products because the 2 page glossy they did let me look at for nothing said absolutely nothing about 2007.)

But that wasn't enough. After I'd (muttering to myself) filled in that information (correctly too), they then (on the next web page) wanted to know about my company; job; industry; my real address and my telephone number - all of which were compulsary fields. So I slapped in N/A for all the fields where there wasn't a drop-down; let chance decide what the drop-down gave; and wrote 123456789 (as usual) for my telephone number. Oh no they didn't like the street address ("N/A") so I had to write in the equally nonsensical "NA katu 1" before I finally was allowed to see that technical paper and deduce from that that yes, indeed, it did work with SharePoint 2007.

Are they mad? Most people (without a web site to fill with product information) would have given up a long time ago.

In the time taken to barely find this out (= "works, probably, with SharePoint 2007") I'd earlier seen full information about all the Bamboo Solutions web parts that at present (4) and in the near future (?) will work with SharePoint 2007 - with not a  "register here" in sight.

That's how it should be. Let me register once I've bought the product and want information you want to keep for buyers only; or at least give me access to your info after I supply ONLY an e-mail address. Heck, I don't even mind if you want me to confirm that e-mail address (not that Quest did that so I could have been putting my favourite enemy's address there if I had a *favourite* enemy, that is).

P.S. One of the comments said that "Quest Site Administrator for SharePoint" will support the v3 SharePoint versions from ca the end of March.

[For those of you who can't be bothered to read the comments.]

As readers of all the blog posts will have seen I've been temporarily transfered to another group. I was happy about that because at long last I will have some steady SharePoint work but I'm discovering a major minus with it.

They work in a so-called "landscape office" space which is a nice word for cubicles with a few pot plants. The snag of course is that I'm used to my having my own office *with a door*. The mere fact that I had a door in my office meant that I could decide for myself when the noise from outside became too annoying and could shut the door (and thus cut off the source of the noise).

Here I can't and as I live in a very quiet house where the "kid" moved out 18 years ago, this almost permanent noise level is more than a bit annoying - and very much more than a bit when I am trying to concentrate on understanding some text  - when doing routine work it's just irritating that people can be so thoughtless.

SharePoint relevance: None, apart from the fact that the non-routine things I'm trying to understand are SharePoint ones.

I.23.4 What is fixed in the fix packs to WSS Service Pack 2?

Last week Nick Swan posted the link to my web page listing of SharePoint v3 books (http://www.asaris.de/sites/walsh/Lists/WSSv3%20FAQ/V%20Books.aspx) in his (UK) blog and both that day and the next day a couple of book orders were placed at Amazon UK via the links on my site. As these were the first orders via the site at Amazon.UK in quite a while (and there have been none since), I think we can safely assume that Nick's blog item helped move things along.

So my thanks to Nick and of course to those people who ordered via the site.

One other good effect of that blog item was that a Spanish-speaking person informed Nick in a comment that a Spanish Language SharePoint 2007 book was released a couple of weeks earlier. I saw this (when I was checking Nick's blog item to see if indeed it had been posted the day (19th) of the first of those Amazon orders) and then added that book too (despite the lack of Amazon links!!) to the list.

This gave me the impulse (not before time) to look for some French and German books and I found the Erol Giraudy (and others) very expensive *but released* book on Amazon.fr and a couple of soon-to-be-released (April?) original books in German at Amazon.de and I was able to add them too.

In the v2 lists I have a book in Italian and one even in Turkish (although I never did get the copy of that the writer said he'd send me - not that I speak Turkish but it would have looked good on my shelf at work!!) so if anyone knows of books on SharePoint 2007 in any language at all (there's for instance a very active blogger in Iran so maybe there's a book in Farsi coming), please let me know about them to the usual hotmail address (which is englantilainen)
