I.14.1 Supported Browsers - General Information

It's been fairly obvious to me for some time where the Microsoft developers get their fun. All you have to do is look for a really "cool" feature that no-one in the business world is ever likely to use and there you have the developers having fun.

But pity the poor TechNet documentation people who are forced to write installation guides in excrutiating detail knowing all the time that any missed out step (however obvious) will cause complaints throughout the known world (and especially from those parts - dare I say Germany [yes, I can, because I like Germany]- where exactitude is a science).

So there's not much chance for fun there then.

However, there are other ways as I discovered today.

I was about to suggest a link to someone in a newsgroup for Installing WSS so I went to the WSS FAQ site and clicked on the View there for Installations

only of course to find that the URL for the first Installing WSS article had changed since I created that FAQ item just over two months ago.

(No, that wasn't the TechNet guys having fun. Well I don't think it was. Microsoft seems to make a habit of amending URLs when you are not looking.)

Anyway having discovered that wrong address I was duty bound to check the rest on that page and so I started checking the rest. All worked but I started seeing items (in the Install MOSS 2007 section of TechNet) that I hadn't listed yet.

(No, even that isn't the TechNet guys having fun. It's quite normal for new items to appear and not be included in RSS feeds)

So I started adding new articles and if necessary amending the old ones and now I finally spotted the TechNet guys at play.

Previously there had been a lot of placeholders there (empty shells of articles), all carefully marked with TBD at the beginning of the name. Not much use if your native language isn't English as you probably think that TBD is one more of the new things (like BDC) that you get with MOSS 2007, but for those of use who know better (TBD = To be done (at least I suppose so!)] it's a very clear indication that the article is empty.

So where's the fun in that ?

The fun is in writing TBD when the article contains some useful text (in some cases quite a lot). The fun continues by having some articles without a TBD that contain nothing but "this is a placeholder" and continues by there actually still being articles that start with TBD that don't contain any useful text.

I can just see the documentation guys chortling at this over their free Lattés.

P.S. If you look at the above-mentioned page you'll see that I've dealt with this by only including links to the pages that actually contain something. (That's why you can see a list of XXXXX (1) followed by (3), (4), (5) and (7).)

 

 

I'll be one of several SharePoint MVPs who will be at the European SharePoint Conference in Berlin next week.

Unlike most of them I am neither an independent consultant nor someone whose company is paying the costs of attendence.

In other words, all the attendence costs (Travel; Hotel; Food) will be paid straight from my pocket and to make it even more annoying I am not even being allowed to regard the 3 conference days as "working days" so I'm being forced to take 4 days holiday (back to Helsinki on Thursday) as well.

Ironically, I have a meeting at work today about the next version of an important WSS-based application here where I consulted on the initial (WSS 2.0) version. It makes you wonder.

The only minor protest I am allowing myself (I couldn't find a pirate flag) is that I shall be representing the "MVP" company (and my job title is "WSS FAQ Maintainer"), rather than the Computer Services (!) company (that shall remain nameless in this as in all earlier and later web posts to protect the innocent [me!]) that you would normally expect to be interested in improving my SharePoint knowledge (and getting some publicity at the conference) but doesn't seem to be.

Anyway I will be - perhaps more than usual, given that background! - very happy to see any readers of this blog there. Come up and say Hello; Hallo; Szervusz or whatever else you fancy. Just don't hit me - I'm already down.

P.S. That meeting turned out to be a sort of internal job interview / confirmation of a transfer. So there's hope that next time there's a SharePoint conference someone other than me is going to pay for me to attend. (Still don't hit me next week ....)

The other good news is that it's a (still-to-be-finally-confirmed but looks solid) permanent transfer to a SharePoint-based job, where going in in the morning and spending the day working is all that is expected rather than the present situation of it not being considered enough to be available to answer every SharePoint question (and to do all the SharePoint internal consulting) I am asked (to do) and to spend the rest of the work time preparing for possible questions/consultancy. After two years in semi-limbo since being out-sourced it's about time.

P.P.S. (Later the same day) So much for "still-to-be-finally-confirmed but looks solid" - the transfer is off and all that has been agreed is that I will work temporarily for them for an unspecified time of their choosing. (I was not involved in this decision.) So I'm back to virtual limbo in other words with the only difference being that for a few weeks (?) I'll be charging all my time (at very low internal rates) as opposed to little bits of it. I'll also be spending the bulk of my time in their office rather than in my own but naturally not moving permanently as it is no longer a (permanent) transfer.

D***. These things are sent to try us but coming on top of the paying-conferences-for-myself business there's been rather too much of this sort of thing recently.

P.P.P.S When I got back to Finland (and hadn't broken a leg when I was there) I managed to persuade my boss to regard the four days I spent in Berlin and travelling back as me "working at home". So I at least didn't lose any holiday days while at the conference but I'm still out of pocket by roughly the amount of the reasonable portable I saw in the paper yesterday that I could have used as a standalone server for MOSS testing purposes. As I haven't got twice that amount of spare money, I'll just have to keep on testing with VMs stored on external USB drives. Pity.

VII.08.01 Free WSS Web Parts - FeedReader (Tim Heuer)

Needless to say despite a mass of time spent in front of computer screens since I arrived back, I've still not got up to date with most things.

I did manage to read and deal with my work e-mail and catch up with what's been happening in the SharePoint Knowledge Base articles front since the middle of January, and I've spent most of my day off working through RSS feeds giving me Microsoft downloads and articles and other useful things and I've also checked some of the many messages sent out to Sharepoint MVPs by SharePoint MVPs but that's about it.

What I have noticed of importance is that there's been a slowing down in the numbers of MOSS KB articles and that half the promised new WSS v3 Application Templates are out. Also that there are two MOSS "templates". What of course I then had to decide was whether to call them "Application Templates" or not despite MS calling the MOSS ones "Templates" and the WSS ones "Application Templates" so I went for a new category of "Other Templates" just to play safe. I can always bulk change them in Datasheet View if it turns out that MS is just trying to confuse us again.

I've also decided to take the plunge and to finally stop adding links to every single Office 2007 paper that MS produces. That saved a lot of time but I also backed away from a complete ban when I found a few useful Excel; PowerPoint and Word papers saying where to find 2003 things in the 2007 products. So that's the policy from now on - all the SP things from MS that I can find; a selection of non-MS SP things which these days means mostly from blogs and then only the best of things for Office 2007 products and other 2007 Server products.

Anyway the results of my labour will be visible in the regular Sunday "WSS FAQ additions and changes" posts both here and to the WSS newsgroup. It's already very long and I haven't even looked for web casts yet (nor for blog items that were posted in the past just over 2 weeks - which will take *quite a while*)

Of course the really big thing that happened while I was away was that the Admin Guide (called for some reason a "companion" - surely they mean a "partner" these days) is finally out and a couple of nice people have even ordered it via the link in the WSS FAQ site's (2007) Book page http://www.asaris.de/sites/walsh/Lists/WSSv3%20FAQ/V%20Books.aspx. Rush there immediately !

For those of you wondering how I managed to update that item on the web page with "*released*" while I was away and still not touch a computer, I'll confess that I had asked a friend at work to check the Amazon site now and again while I was away to see if the book was out and gave him the password to update the item. That's why it was only updated at www.wssfaq.com and not at wss.collutions.com which was no doubt another mystery to afficianados.

I don't like forums. It's such a mess compared to using a newreader to have to access a URL to get to a single forum and then to repeat this for all the rest. It's also a mess that a forum doesn't keep track of which messages you have read already.

But at least with the new SharePoint forums there's an improvement.

For each forum there's a RSS feed. (and here, thanks to Lawrence Liu in a public newsgroup, is the full list)

So now when using an RSS Reader you can at least keep track of which messages you haven't read yet.

Also, to my surprise, when I clicked the link to one of these feeds, I went straight to the item in the forum AND (and this was the surprise) was able to reply without needing to log in with my passport (provided the correct one of my passports was active at the time ..) and it recognized me.

Maybe forums aren't so bad after all - provided you don't use them as if they are forums that is!

P.S. Unfortunately at the moment the RSS feeds above are only telling you if a new thread has been started. They are not giving you anything if there has been a reply to a thread. I have it on good authority that this will change in a few months time. Then the feeds will finally be how I want them to be.

The main Helsinki (Finnish language) paper put out a correction today to yesterday's article about Apple's IPhone.

They apologised for having said that it contained a GPS device when it didn't. (For some reason I am reminded of the phrase "everything but the kitchen sink" at this point)

My wife had torn this clipping out (I read the main Helsinki *Swedish language* paper and only glance through the Finnish one) so that I wouldn't miss it and had added this pencilled in comment

"oh well, we won't bother then".

[Important to the story is that I have just bought an expensive Garmin GPS with colour screen and maps (which replaced my old, bullkier, less expensive Garmin Gps without mapping but which still works)]

Off-topic, yes, but too good to waste ...

There probably won't be five things and I'm certainly not going to tag anyone else.

Let's see.

1. I was once British U-18 chess champion and the guy who won that title the year before me went on to become Great Britain's second Chess Grandmaster.

2. I have worked (and lived) in five countries for longer than I have worked in my home country.

3. My first micro was a CPM-based Osborne-1. This was when I learnt the benefit of taking lots and lots of backups (those early floppy drives weren't perfection).

I re-visited Hungary last year for the first time after almost 30 years and everything was still very familiar despite the changed street names and the new flashy shopping malls (and thanks to 3 months solid refresh work I could still get by in Hungarian - although the Hungarians I met may not think so).

5. Finland is warming up and I'm now muttering that I wish it was colder and snowing (whereas before I was muttering about it being too cold).

Ah well, I just - only just - made the five but I'm going to stick with the vow of not tagging anyone else!
