Mike Walsh's WSS and more - "This is my second post to this forum"

People writing to forums are sometimes very odd.

I came today across a post where the poster felt compelled to tell us that it was his second post to that forum. How that is relevant to any question is beyond me.

That on the other hand is fairly rare.

What is more common are the people who write at the bottom of their posts "please help me!" or even the more strident "PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!". Do they really think that this line makes the people who spend some of their free time answering other peoples questions more likely to answer just this one? If so, they are wrong.

Finally there are the relatively few people who write that their own question is "Urgent!" - usually in the subject and often also in the text. Well that is a real turn-off as when you look at the questions there is NEVER anything there that is any more urgent than any other forum question. (Even if there is, the forums are not the place to post urgent questions - instead they should take the risk of being forced to pay and call Microsoft Customer Support Services [if that's this week's name]) with their problem).

Luckily in the forums I can do something I can't do in the equivalent newsgroups and edit the subject lines. Usually I do this when someone posts a question in say the Workflow forum that has a Subject of "Workflow" which doesn't help people scanning that forum to see if there is something they can answer, so I change the subject to better reflect the question put, but I can also use that possibility to get rid of all "Urgent"s from the Subject.

and how about people who, after you answered their question ask another, unrelated question in reply to that. Not bothering to mark your answer as an answer.
And that leads to the thread hijackers that go to popular threads and ask new questions, because people are reading and replying on the popular thread...
And finaly - people who contact you through your blog, and ask you questions instead of just posting them in the forums...

That's a great post when considering your perspective. It's logical, shows why you may change a subject line and also may have information to help newer users do a little better job trying to "help you, help them."

Consider the newer user. This may be a discouraging post. They do feel like their need is urgent. They are trying to call attention to it. They are under pressure from others at work. They don't understand why things are not working and they are asking for help. If one is to sit in that seat and wear those shoes and empathize from that position, one understands why something feels so URGENT!!!

My point... Yes, you are right. So what?!?! People need help and they may not have been in your shoes before. So, they don't know how to walk through this process. It's unsettling for them.

Just my $.02 coming from a perspective of once needing so much help, having transitioned to providing more help, and noticing the difference of what it takes to really be remarkable when helping others. I sure appreciate it when others "help me help them" and I notice their remarkable service.

Good post. Got me thinking... and appreciating that I can follow so many RSS feeds and get helped out so often, by great user groups and forums, etc....
