First German Language SharePoint 2010 book released

We've already had something like twenty released SharePoint 2010 books in English and even two books in Spanish, but so far none of the several native German language SharePoint 2010 books I list have made it to publication.

2010 SP RSS feeds finally spotted - 2010 KB Articles section now better

I've occasionally been checking this page

which is a page that most of the Microsoft products (new and old) and which for products that are included links to a RSS feed for KB Articles for that product.

It's been a problem for a long time that there haven't been any RSS Feeds for KB articles for the SharePoint 2010 products as it has meant that the only ones I have been able to include in the KB Articles section at wssv4faq.mindsharp.com have been the ones that are for both the 2007 and the 2010 SP products. (Given me by my 2007 RSS feeds)

Now however the check of that page gave me feeds for SPS 2010 (not SPF 2010 though); SPD 2010 and the 2010 version of Forefront (Protection) for SharePoint. I also found InfoPath 2010 although I'm fairly sure I already had that (it was an empty feed in any case) as I had feeds for all the normal 2010 Office products. Still missing is SharePoint Workspace 2010.

Anyway from now on, the KB Articles section will be as up-to-date as the equivalent v3 section has always been. So please check it out at

Reconciling Images and Text when a book is published

I've just started looking through my book in the hunt for words or phrases that could be better and I discovered that although the entire book uses a server name of SPF1, the (otherwise correct - so no major problem [breathes in]) images in the installation chapter (2) all use wss1.

The text in Chapter 2 though uses the correct SPF1.

So I checked the .doc files I received for the major effort of amending the text based on the comments of the technical and other reviewers and found that all the images that I reviewed in chapter 2 were showing SPF1. So everything at that time looked fine.

The problem is that the publishers keep the images separate from the text and so although the correct image is in the doc file, when it comes to the book itself they use the text from the .doc file but the images from a folder they keep for each chapter.

(Don't ask me why. It seems to be a method which is bound to give problems)

Now what I do know is that originally I did images with wss1 in them but then realised that SPF1 would be a better name and so I completely re-did the installation and created identical images but with spf1 in them (and a different port in fact for the central administration page as this was a completely new installation and thus the installation generated a new port for the Central Administration site).

I would then have replaced my copies of the images with the new corrected versions.

So either I sent the wrong image files (i.e. from a folder containing the old versions or from the wrong machine) to the publishers or I had already sent the original image files and when I sent the revised versions to the publishers they didn't overwrite the old versions.

Either way, it's not nice but the main thing is that the screens are the right screens with the correct Image numbers and in the correct place on the page and hopefully people will accept that in the four screen prints where the name used is wss1 it should actually be spf1. (It's in three of the four a very very small part of the image).

Later: It looks like this is down to me. The portable with the master copies of the images had the wss1 images not the later spf1 images. I'll probably find those on a safety copy somewhere. The PDF files (last check before printing) which use the separate images - unlike the DOC files used for major editing, which use the images included in the DOC files - also had the wss1 images but these were difficult to read in detail (except one) so I could almost be forgiven for not seeing the wss1 in those screens. (and as I was mainly looking for typos I can't say I really did any more with the screens than check that they fitted the text)

My book is finally out and available at Amazon US

Time for a bit of self-publicity.

After what seems like far too long a wait, my book is finally in print (I have received one copy of it) and is listed as In Stock at Amazon US.

The easy option would have just been to take the old (WSS 3.0) book's 24 chapters ("Hours") and amend them for SPF 2010.

Instead I took the perhaps foolhardy (and certainly it cost me a lot more work and time) decision to try to make a better book than the first one.

So I expanded the section on the connection between Office products and SPF 2010 (this was to a certain extent necessary because I didn't want to leave people with office 2003 clients in the cold, so whereas the 2007 book had Office 2003 and 2007 with WSS 3.0, this one, while concentrating on Office 2010 also has both Office 2007 and 2003 with SPF 2010) because this isn't covered in any detail in most SharePoint books.

A couple of chapters had to go because of that decision, so I chose those that were slightly off-topic and where I thought that reading a dedicated book on the subject would be more useful.

I re-wrote completely both the Introduction and Chapter One with the intention of making it crystal clear that this is a book on SPF 2010 not SPS 2010, even though users starting to use SPS 2010 could find it very useful to read.

But the new chapter I'm most pleased with is the final one.

There I decided that the main part of a final chapter should be about where to go for the next steps. So most of that chapter consists of short descriptions of related areas that were not covered in the book with in each case a recommendation of a book (or books) which cover that area in depth.

Unlike most books which usually recommend for further reading books from the same publisher (which often makes those recommendations 'books of an acceptable quality' rather than 'best of breed'), I - while the book was in the planning stage - got permission to recommend books from other publishers. So I can hold my head up high and say that the books I recommend in that chapter are the best that I know about for each topic there.

That is perhaps why I'm most happy about that chapter, but even without the book recommendations I'm happy about the brief descriptions there too.

Now it only needs for people to buy the book and complain that the final chapter doesn't have enough exercises ...

Just found - Office site with SPD 2010 and SP 2010 articles

Maybe I've just been looking in the wrong place or maybe I've been relying on my RSS feeds too much, but I've just found a mass of SPD 2010 and SP 2010 articles with the Office inprint which I've been adding (links to) the wssv4faq site. (All dated the 19th of July there although I've been adding them on and off for the last 3 days and I have no idea - because in the Office web space they don't tell you - when they actually were "published".)

Some of there are just simple things like "What's New in SharePoint Foundation 2010". You will perhaps be surprised to find that it suggests at one point that you can use the new function it describes "in your MySites" which of course as a SPF 2010 user you don't have!

(Yes, I've passed this error on.)

But others are quite detailed explanations with useful screen shots about how to do various things (mainly in SPD 2010).

However the one that impressed me the most so far - at least for it's massive use of large and clear colo(u)red diagrams is one about the error messages you may get when verifying a Visio workflow prior to transfering it to SharePoint Designer 2010.

(Yes, I didn't know you needed to verify them first either).
